V PAGE 5-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1971 Iwice Told Tales HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS In" M FORTY YEARS AGO v f (Taken from the files of July 9, 1931) " Waters of Fox River and Wonder Lake claimed the lives of two people in this vicinity over the weekend. Otto An derson, 29 years oltl, who has a cottage at Fair Oaks sub- divisipn adjoining Emerald Park on the river was drowned. His body was recovered in a half hour. Mrs. Louise San- dkohl, 38 years old, drowned in Wonder Lake. „ In a letter received by Mrs. Ellen Ensign from her son, D.W. Ensign of Maple Shade, N.J., he tells of his fine garden and flowers and the success of his family. His daughter, Dorothea, advanced from fourth to the fifth grade receiving two diplomas, one for scholarship and the other for attendance. Betty Jane Conway and Margaret Bishop entertained the members of the eighth grade graduating class of St. Mary's school and a few friends at the former's home. It was a lawn party with games, music and dancing after which lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Collins and son, Roger, of Orangeville and Alan Collins of Beloit, Wis., spent Friday night in the J.V. Buckland home in Ringwood and attended the fourth of July celebration on Saturday at Greenwood. Mr. and Mrs. William J. Meyers of Johnsburg were pleasantly surprised at their home. The evening was spent in 0 playing games. Dancing was enjoyed. Music was furnished by artists from WRJW radio station at Racine. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 11, 1946) At two recent meetings between the board members of three nearby rural grade schools and of the McHenry public grade school, plans have' been inaugurated for con solidation of these districts. The three rural districts are Emerald Park, Prairie and Griswold Lake. A1 Gust who has been organization director of the McHenry County Farm Bureau for a number of years, will resign to the Farm \ Bureau Board in order that he may take up employment as farm fieldman for the Bowman Dairy company in the Madison, Delavan area after three years out for army service. Peter M. Leisser of Route 1, McHenry, has received his discharge from the service. Miss Eleanor Schaefer was guest of honor at a personal shower held at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Peter Schaefer, in West McHenry. Miss Schaefer will become the bride of Mr. Alfred B. Miller on Aug. 7. Joe and Henry Weber have been enjoying a fishing trip near Oshkosh, Wis., this week. Something novel in wedding announcements were those sent out by Mr. and Mrs. John Shadle. On one side of the announcement was a picture of the newlyweds while on the other side was their motor cycle, bedecked with a "Just Married" sign and the customary tin cans and streamers. They were married June 22. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 13, 1961) A lovely 17 year old brunette, Gail Marquart, of Hunterville Park, McHenry, topped seventeen - contestants to be • selected queen of Fiesta Day. The water fights held on Riverside Drive Tuesday evening in connection with Fiesta week activities drew huge crowds to see the Rotary team take top place in the final contests. Members of the winning team included Jerome Buch, Lee Hiller, Tom Landre, Glen Peterson and Harry Strnad. On July 7, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ziebel became parents of a son at McHenry hospital. St. Patrick's church was the setting for a pretty wedding July 8 when Miss Ann Weber became the bride of Mr. Ronald J. Vacula. Robert J. Conway, local agent for State Farm In surance, will attend the national convention of the sales force at Toronto, Canada, Aug. 6 through 8 to qualify. It is necessary to exceed production goals and maintain superior service. It is not often that McHenry Rotary club has an opportunity to welcome fellow Rotarians from countries outside the United States. For this reason it was a special pleasure to have Roily Lascelles from Hon duras, South America, at the last meeting. Thursday and Friday, July 20 and 21, will mark grand opening of Rudy's Drive-In at Lakeland Park. The drive-in is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Ficken. Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Schulz of Sunnyside Beach celebrated their fifty-eighth wedding anniversary recently. Bike Hike Combines Fun And Learning How4*1 about a bike hike? It's the thing to do, you know. It's wonderful exercise, produces no air pollution and it's fun for the whole family. An indication of the growing popularity of the 4-H bicycle program is seen in the enrollment statistics. During 1970 some 135,000 4-H boys and girls participated in the program supervised by the Cooperative Extension service. The program is designed to teach young people between the ages of 9 and 19 care, main tenance and safe operation of the bicycle and the fun op portunities of cycling. Kids learn the rules of the road and ordinances of the community pertaining to bicycles and bicycle riding. And they gain appreciation of these laws for personal safety and courtesy to others. There is an added bonus here as most of the laws concerning correct bicycle riding also pertain to driving an automobile. Today when "having a set of wheels" is no McHenry Man Eafns Award At Institute John Koerber of 304 North Country Club drive, McHenry, has been awarded a certificate from the Lake Forest College Industrial Management in stitute for completion of a four- year evening program in middle management training, He was sponsored by Outboard Marine corporation in Waukegan. COMPLETES COURSE Sheet metal workers who completed an advanced course on air balancing and testing received certificates of com pletion at a dinner meeting July 13 of the Fox Valley Sheet Metal Employers association, held in Elgin. Graduates in- longer a luxury, these young people will move easily to the driving of a much more powerful piece of equipment. But before that day comes, a bicycle is providing more and more young people with fun, mobility and exercise. Rules of the road are but one aspect of the "learning by doin" 4-H bicycle program. The young people* also learn to judge when a job is too big for them to handle alone and when a reliable serviceman would be consulted to keep their bicycle in safe working con dition. For more information about the 4-H Bicycle program, contact McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service. eluded Christopher J. Bet Althoff's Hardware presenting these certificates, .C. Geri Neubauer Girls Collect Glass Bottles For Ecology Karen Day and Janeen Frett have been collecting glass bottles to be donated to the Job's Daughters bottle collecting... Although neither girl is a member they volun teered to aid the worthwhile endeavor in the interest of our country's ecology. The girls have been picking up the bottles on Virginia Avenue and Victoria, every two weeks. Anyone interested in helping out outside of these two streets can drop off their bottles either 385-7 m at 2928 Virginia or 2919 Vic toria. Any size, shape or color bottles or jars are needed for the glass re-cycling. This is a worthwhile project, if you've been reading the weekly newspapers you remember that McHenry is far behind our neighboring communities in aiding this endeavor. Let's give these kids a helping hand and at the same time do a good turn for "Ecology". DENNIS MARTELL MARRIED Dennis James Martell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Martell of 515 N.
