PAGE 16-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, Abdut This School The Parkland School is designed to provide a learning en vironment that will implement a particular philosophy of teaching, based on individual pupil growth and development ^he educational program is planned to meet the needs of the late 1971 * 1 ' pre adolescent and the early adolescent for a secure but horizon- expanding transition from the elementary to the high school program. * The basis for this educational philosophy is the recognition that each youngster is an important and unique individual who should be given a learning experience based on his individual needs, talents and desires, which will give him the opportunity to develop to his fullest potential. Those responsible for this commitment hope to help develop the many and varied talents of the child, to emphasize his strongerones, and to help him attain and maintain a positive self-image. For this purpose it is necessary to determine a child's academic levels and diagnose his needs; and starting at these levels, to prescribe an educational program for him which may be adjusted as necessary to make it possible for the child to move continuously and successfully at his best rate. The staff is organized into interdisciplinary teams, and the building is designed to provide the flexibility of space need to complement the flexibility of time and grouping provided by such organizations. The staff organization, combined with the employment of materials on a need basis rather than on a grade level basis, evaluation by individual progress rather than by grade level standards, and an increasing pupil role in his own education by offering more self-select ion, self-direction, and self-evaluation will lead the staff, hopefully, to an ever increasing individualized and humanized educational program. To this end the planning committee has worked with the ar chitects in the layout of this^ learning facility. cv _ PRICK ERICSON, Mathematics, graduated from Illinois State University with a BS in Education Bruce taught last year at McHenr\ Junior High School He is married. Parkland School fchall strive to impart ideals and methods; to train her students to live like young men and ladies, young men and young ladies of judgement-with an internal poise- a character.
