Terra Cotta road Ult. 176) Crystal Lake, last Saturday at 12:45 p.m. $49,304 Value Set On Raid Items Seized A sheriff's raid on the J. and L. service station, located at 357 E. Terra Cotta road (Rt. 176) Crystal Lake, last Saturday netted items with a monetary value of $49,304. However, Sheriff Art Tyrrell commented at the conclusion of the investigation -that if the confiscation of this marijuana will keep one youngster fromf being subjected to use, "a parent would probably pay a million dollars". The station lessee, Norman Proctor Roberts, was sum moned from his home to the station, where Detective Sgt. James Connelly and Detective John Tyrrell had uncovered numerous football parlay cards and a dozen large bags of pull- jar tickets. In addition, many slips of paper listing the amount of wagers on the results of football games were seized. It was only when the officers uncovered fifteen large sacks of marijuana in a barrel in the back room of the premises, that Sheriff Tyrrell was notified. Total weight of the marijuana was 17 pounds. The sheriff commented that at today's "street price" it would sell for $280 per pound. Assistant State's Atty. Gary Hurt, who took part in the raid, listened as Sheriff's deputies received, from the constantly ringing telephone, wagers on the results of horse races at various tracks throughout the country. The persons who called are not yet fully iden tified. Although football parlay cards and wagering slips were found on Roberts, he refused to admit or deny implication. Detective James Weidner of the Crystal Lake Police department, who assisted deputies on the raid, said the amount of bets found in Roberts possession totaled $750, adding that in the gambling field, "the day was just beginning". The ten sacks of pull-jar tickets, selling for one dollar each, totaled $39,000. Roberts has been charged with being the keeper of a gambling place, keeping a book for the purpose of recording bets and wagers, and with the possession of marijuana. He is presently held in county jail under $13,000 bond. Judge William Brody of McHenry, who instituted the warrants, set the court date for Oct. 18.
