PLAINDEALER PHOTO This ol' lady, along wi' a lot o' folks, is pretty perturbed over the recent Hallo'een goin's on. A body goes all out t' serve the younguns an' enjoy givin' 'em the treats they come for, on the day before the holiday, as set by the community, for the reason that it falls on a Sunday, an' lo and behold, they come a poundin' at the door, all day Sunday. When a body spends three hours a makin' pop-corn, arf baggin* it fer eight goblins an' servin' it for more than seven hours, it's time fer a rest. Seems like the little people/ an' plenty o' the older opes, don't have no respect' fer others, an' the self-respect is lackin', when they feel that they should git all they kin get, from others who try t' be good t' 'em. I like childern, an' ha' given a lot o' time, an' patience t' a good many. T' have 'em treat me, an' the rest o' us folks who make an effort t' be kind, in a way that shows they don't have respect fer us, an' take advantage o' us, in every way, makes me feel purty sad. Where are the parents, who allow sich goin's on. Seems there's some lackin' somewhere, in teachin' little folks how t' live in happy correlation in our society. When I wuz a tike, an' also when my kiddies were small, we didn't practice the "Tricks 'r Treats", excusetfer beggin'. If I'd done anythin' like that, my daddy'd tan my pants, an' make me take everythin' back t* where I got it. Hallo'een seems t' be an' excuse t' beg, which we wuz taught, in years past, that it wuz a disgrace t' do. Fact is, that the stuff collected gits stale, an' ends up in the garbage can, before it can be eaten. I make lots o' popcorn, 'cause I don't approve o' too many sweets fer the little ones. This ol' lady, grandma o' ten, feels mighty grieved o'er the way the young tykes 're a growin' up, wi' little regard fer t'other feller, lackin' in proper sense o' responsibility t' a job well-done, concern fer their own clothes, an' personal properties. The rewards 'd be high, if the attitude wuz changed t' "Give all ye kin," 'stead o' Git all ye kin git." A good many folks feel that the whole thing's gotten out o' hand, and they suggest that the privilege had better be done away wi'. I kin recall a few years back, when I first came t' this nice little village, that there seemed t' be a reluctance on the part o' the childern past eleven, twelve years o' age, t' don the attire o' ghosts an' goblins, an' we, all, git a lot o' fun in seein' the small ones all dressed up. It becomes ridiculous when older ones participate in the beggin', an' pertendin' jist t' git a lot o' free treats. Now, the worst thing that happens is the harmful things, which fall inter the hands o' little childern, an' the fatal results, in several cases. We, elders, feel that gittin' back t' home parties, taffy-pulls, bobbin' fer apples, at home, in churches, an' community meetin* houses, properly chaperoned, afford a bit of fun an' a great deal o' safety. We feel that, fer the safety o' the little ones, an' the psychological welfare o' all concerned, it'd be a good idee t' ferget the popular manner o' celebratin' All Saints Day, 'r limitin' it t' those twelve, 'nd under.
