Name Coordinator For MCC Student Contest Mrs. Elouise Scott has been named campus coordinator for the 1971-1972 Student Achievement Recognition program at McHenry County college. As campus coordinator, Mre. Scott will supervise the soliciting and gathering of entries, judging, and publicity activities for the student competition, being sponsored for the third successive year by Continental Bank, Chicago. Mrs. Scott is coordinator of the individualized study lab at the college and has been a member of the faculty since the college was founded in 1968. Mrs. Scott earned her Bachelor's degree at Arkansas State Teachers college and a Master's degree from Northern Illinois university. She has done specialized work from other institutions. Two McHenry County college students, one man and one woman, will be chosen next February by locally selected judges as winners of the campus competition. The two will be those individuals who have best demonstrated noteworthy achievement toward their desired career goals and who have shown leadership qualities through participation in campus and community activities. The winners will receive a $100 cash award, a certificate of merit and their names will be permanently inscribed on a school plaque. Their achievement also permits them to compete in the district and final state competition. Last year, Jean Gende and Patrick Pierce, both of McHenry, were selected as the two outstanding MCC students. The award winners from the local campus will participate in one of six district competitions next March with the winners from the forty-five other public junior college campuses in Illinois. Two finalists will be chosen from each district, one man and one woman, and each will receive a $250 cash award and a personally engraved plaque. The twelve district winners are then invited to Chicago, where two state winners will be selected, again one man and Springs Orchard in Twin Lakes, Wis. They were carved or decorated by the boys at a den meeting. one woman. The two will be honored at an awards banquet April 27 and will receive $1,000 and a trophy. Entry applications are now available from Mrs. Scott at the college, Room A-214. They are accepted from candidates or from faculty and ad ministration sponsors until Jan: 14, 1972, and should be submitted to Mrs. Scott. To be eligible, students must be in good academic standing and have completed nine semester hours or 12 quarter hours and be an enrolled junior college student at the time of the final judging in April. The bank is sponsoring the program in cooperation with the Illinois Association of Community and Junior Colleges. The bank is providing over $14,000 in award money and is administering the program. The purpose of the program is to focus more public at tention on Illinois junior colleges by highlighting in dividual student ac complishment. It is not a scholarship awards com petition, but rather one designed to give community and state-wide recognition to two-year college students for o u t s t a n d i n g i n d i v i d u a l achievement. Substitution Of Soybeans In New '72 Program Substitution of soybeans for wheat and feed grains in 1972 shows the flexibility of the new- set-aside program, Joe Getty, chairman of the McHenry County ASC committee, said. With the apparent abundant production of wheat and feed grain this year, and the an ticipated continued need for soybeans, the set-aside program permits participants to meet the goal - produce those crops needed by the market rather than those already in sufficient supply - without a loss of history or program payments. The substitution provision permits participants in the 1972 set-aside program to plant all or any combination of their acreage to soybeans, corn, wheat, grain sorghum, or barley, without loss of planting Free Program 4 Adult Education Courses Offered Spanish-Speaking There are two cars built in Sweden. The person who opens the door will find an attractive dark-haired woman with sympathetic brown eyes standing there. With a friendly smile, she begins speaking Spanish, for that is the only language the person knows. In Spanish, she will say, "I am Senora Yolanda Roses Lopez, coordinator \of adult basic education Jat McHenry County college, awl want to tell you about a special free program that is available f o r S p a n i s h - s p e a k i n g students." Mrs. Lopez refers to the adult basic education program, which is funded through the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Springfield and administered at McHenry County college by Dr. Marvin Lieske, dean of instruction. Basically, the courses teach English as a second language. They also include some simple mathematics to teach the students how to manage their money. The classes are taught, history or program benefits. Soybeans, wheat, and feed grains are interchangeable for history purposes. Wheat allotments have been issued and the set-aside required by wheat participants announced as 83 percent. free of charge, by bilingual teachers. Sessions run for fourteen weeks. Further in formation may be obtained by calling Mrs. Lopez at the college. Because transportation is a major problem for many of the students, it was necessary to hold evening classes in four different locations in the county: Marengo high school, Harvard Junior high school, First Baptist church of McHenry, and Cary-Grove high school. In addition, there is a daytime program in McHenry for those people who work at night. Mrs. Lopez makes every effort to locate students and persuade them to attend these classes, which would help them so much toward adapting to life in McHenry county, for the courses teach far more than English and simple math. Spanish-speaking strangers in a strange land, baffled and confused by a new way of life, learn how to live here. The ABE program helps them become more employable, helps them advance in their present jobs, helps them communicate with people, and helps them cope with the problems their children face. Thus, Spanish- speaking people learn to be residents who fit comfortably into our society. However, Mrs. Lopez might not tell her prospective students that she is well- qualified to conduct such a program. Not only does she hold a Master's degree in Education from Loyola university, but she is also a graduate of the University of Chile, Santiago, where she majored in Education, with a special interest in English. She also has the equivalent of a M.A. degree from the University of Chile. Interested in helping Spanish-speaking people in the U.S. learn how to live in this country, she started working with ABE in 1966, and she now has charge of the program in McHenry county, where she works very hard, not only to help these people, but also, to find them. Since they neither read nor speak English, Mrs. Lopez must rely on posters written in Spanish, an nouncements of ABE classes ! A native of Chile, Mrs. Lopez moved to this country with her husband, Alfonso, an export manager, soon after they were married. They have three children, a Son, Alfonso, 14; a daughter, Patricia, 12; and a daughter, Gina, 8. So, in ad dition to administering ABE, Mrs. Lopez also takes care of her family and somehow finds time to sew, play tennis, and to participate in other activities. POLITICAL CORNER REP.
