V c PAGE 5-PLAINDEALER-TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1971 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 12, 1931) A beautiful late autumn wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's church in McHenry when Miss Vera Pitzen became the bride of Mr. Joseph J. Diedrich on Saturday Nov. 9. The American Legion car­ nival and dance held at the Bridge ballroom on Armistice Day evening was the biggest event of its kind ever sponsored by the McHenry post. A record breaking crowd of more than 350 people was in attendance. The gun which was given away went to Dr. C.W. Klontz, a cash prize of ten dollars went to John Dreymiller and Syd Corson of Woodstock received a prize of five dollars. The first killing frost of the season reached this vicinity Nov. 6 and gardens are now black and the leaves have fallen in showers from the trees. James Haverin, 61 years old. died at his home at Lily Lake Nov. 6, death resulted from cancer of the larynx. Mrs. Gordon Smoak was injured in an automobile ac­ cident Sunday afternoon when her car broke, running into a tree. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Thorsell and family moved Sunday to Roselle, 111., where they will live with their son. The next court of honor will take place at McHenry, Nov. 16, at the community high school. A large crowd of boys from all over the county are making plans to be present. The Eagle ceremony will be put on for the benefit of Harold Vycital, who will become an Eagle Scout at that time. This makes three Eagles in the troop at McHenry and reflects the fine leadership which Mr. Schoenholtz, the Scoutmaster, and the men of McHenry are giving to the Scout program. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 14, 1946) The public voted on high school building project. Those who have been able to keep in touch with the educational situation in our city realize the need for more adequate building facilities at our high school. The school has enjoyed a steady growth since its in­ ception as a community high school in 1921. At that time there were about ninety-two students while today 286 pupils are attending the institution. Marion's Beauty shop operated by Marion Donnelly formerly located in the Krause News Agency, is now located in her home on Riverside Drive. Frederick W. Thomsen of Chicago, a resident of Pistakee Bay for about forty years died in Chicago and was buried Nov. 2. A very beautiful fall wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's church Nov. 9 when Miss Mary Lou Stoffel of this city became the bride of Mr. Roland Ekstrom of Elgin. Msgr. C.S. Nix officiated at the double ring ceremony. Mrs. Clarence Angelese reviewed the book "Out On A Limb" by Louise Baker at the meeting of the Mothers club held at the R.M. Fleming home on Riverside drive. Music was furnished by a boys' octet from the high school who sang a spiritual, "Climbin' Up The Mountain" and by a member of the octet, Arthur Epert, who sang "The Song of the Open Road." Lieut. Virginia Jepson returned to her home in Ringwood from Germany. She has received her discharge. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 16, 1961) It was a proud moment for Manager Jim Powers of the McHenry National Tea store and company officials when Mayor Donald P. Doherty officiated at the ribbon cutting ceremony at the opening of the new and spacious store on Elm street, Nov. 14. Watching the official act were Otto Geisler, district manager, Roy Petersen, district superin­ tendent, and Henry Nieman, Chicago branch manager. Cynthia is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adams of McHenry and Edward is the son of Mrs. Edward J. Frett of 410 N. Country Club Drive. The newlyweds are residing in McHenry. CITY RULES ON COUNTRY CLUB DISPUTE At long last a decision was reached on the two year old dispute involving the McHenry Country Club and the John Street residents. The new ruling states that the Club will be permitted to use the present parking area on John Street for cart storage for another five years but will not be permitted to improve the property or the parking lot. AREA NEWS Mr. and Mrs. John G. Jones of Charlotte avenue recenUy spent a few days as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Primas of Elmhurst during which they enjoyed a neighborhood card party. We have our doubts as to which situation is the most out of hand, the stray dogs or the falling leaves. Both seem a lost cause.
