American Legion Auxiliary News UNIT 491 By Pearl Cooper The November meeting of the McHenry American Legion Auxiliary Unit 491 was con ducted by the first vice- president, Mrs. Glen (Dottie) Messer, in the absence of the president, Mrs. David (Doris) Henken. The installation of the new Junior officers was held at this meeting of the Senior group. Noelle Reid was installed as president of the Junior group; vice-president is Felicia York; secretary and historian is Laura Kuhns; the new treasurer is Linda Durkin; chaplain is Cassie York; Laurel Latimer is the new sergeant-at- arms; and Leah Congdon is the assistant sergeant-at-arms. Past President, Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper, was the in stalling officer and Mrs. Courtney (Cecilia) Violett, also past president of the McHenry unit, was installing sergeant-at- arms. Mrs. Edwin (Eieanore) Reid is the Junior advisor and Cindy Reid is the outgoing president of the Junior group. Donations were made to the Indian Children Scholarship fund, the I.S.S.C. School at Normal, May Day and Lawn Party at Elgin State hospital, Veterans' Craft Maintenance in the name of the Past President's Parley, Christmas Seals and Easter Seals. Membership Chairman Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Miller, an nounced that a total of 282 members, 239 Seniors and 43 Juniors have paid their dues. Dues can still be paid to any member of the membership team or to Mrs. Miller. Children and Youth Chair man Martha Dignan thanked members for the food for the Christmas baskets and an nounced that members could still bring canned goods, toys and clothing before the baskets will be packed Dec. 19. It was also announced that the December McHenry County council meeting will be held in Harvard Dec. 3. Special prizes were won by Pauline Pickett and Leah Congdon. Irene Consago was not present to accept the at tendance award Thirty-seven members were present at the meeting and Analise Bauer and Mary Brittain were introduced as new members. Betty Lou Smith will be the refreshment chairman for the December meeting, which will be held Monday, Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m. and will be a pot-luck. All members are asked to bring a dollar gift for the gift exchange as Santa Claus will be there to pass out the gifts. Grams Club Will Meet For Holiday Party Tuesday, Nov. 30, is the deadline for dinner reser vations for the sixteenth annual Snow Ball dinner and dance to be held Saturday, Dec. 4, at the American Legion home, 2505 N. Ringwood road. The dinner will be served at 7 o'clock, followed by dancing at 9. The event is sponsored by the Lakeland Park Women's club and has become a tradition to herald the holiday season. Reservations for the dinner may be made with the ticket chairman, Lyda K. Radisch, 1712 N. Knoll avenue, the president, Marie Cross, or the vice-president, Beverly Walinski. Over-the-counter sale of 1972 motor vehicle license plates for vehicles licensed on a calendar year basis will begin Wed nesday, Dec. 1, at two Secretary of State's office outlets in Springfield, the three motor vehicle facilities in Chicago and at 115 banks throughout the state, Secretary of State John W. Lewis has announced. The date is also the first one on which the 1972 plates may legally be displayed on vehicles, Secretary Lewis said. The number of banks par ticipating in the over-the- counter sale service this year is an increase of twenty-four over last year's total, Lewis said. Banks will accept only renewal applications for passenger cars, and the ap plications must be ac companied by the 1971 iden tification cards or, if the cards have been lost, the certificates of title. At their discretion, the banks may choose to charge an ad ditional fee, not to exceed $1, for the service to offset the cost of a $6,800 validating machine each has had to purchase. The banks will also set their own hours. The Secretary of State's office outlets, in addition to passenger car renewal ap plications, will process all other types of applications, including original registrations, tran sfers and certificates of title, Lewis said. At all locations, banks and Secretary of State's office outlets, applicants will be given assistance in filling out ap plications, their applications will be validated and the plates issued. In Chicago, the locations are at 5301 West Lexington street, 5401 North Elston avenue, and 9901 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., drive. The hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at all three. Banks which will sell plates include the Home State Bank of Crystal Lake. Associate Circuit Judge Leonard Brody Donald M. Student Art Exhibit At Area College Beginning Nov. 27, and until Dec. 17, Ben Stephen Bever- wyk, a former student at McHenry County college, at the invitation of Joseph Rybacek, head of MCC's art department, will exhibit his paintings, et chings and sculpture in a one- man show at the college, 6200 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake. Ben, currently a 21-year-old art major at Western Illinois university, took art courses under Rybacek, who says, "I was most impressed with Ben's experiments with various art mediums, particularly the use of salt crystals, to achieve unusual effects and also, his use of color." Although Ben won an art contest at the age of 8, he did not appear very interested in art until he studied sculpture with Arthur Pelz at Oak Park- River Forest high school. He won an Award of Merit from the Scholastic Art foundation ^during his high school years. PLAINDEALER PHOTO CORRECTIONS GRANTS Seven Illinois counties, Carroll, Logan, Randolph, Menard, Kankakee, Cass and Macoupin were awarded grants totaling $117,483 by the Illinois Department of Corrections Bureau of Detention Standards and Services to hire additional jail staff and renovate existing facilities. The seven awards were made from a $500,000 grant made to the bureau last May by the Illinois Law En forcement commission (ILEC). Under terms of the grant, 90 percent of the funds used to hire additional staff come from ILEC and 10 percent from the individual counties.
