PA£E6~PUMNDEALER-FRinAY. DECEMBER 24, 1971 A ' • ml f rra d* . JSLrf ' M » - If we hadn't known before, we realized last Sunday that time is flitting by. . It was on Sunday that we joined a large .group of fri ends honoring George and Mar garet Stoffel in Woodstock on the happy occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. George and Margaret were our neighbors on the West Side from childhood up the line. They were a fine pair of young peo ple and still are a fine pair -- always friendly and true blue friends. EARL WALSH~ So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Baseball has been crowded completely off the sports pages of late. Papers have given a lot of ink to the Bears. They need more than ink. If you are following the Re ports in this section on the Mc Henry County College basket ball team, you must have not iced that Bruce Harbecke is really pouring the ball through the nets. It is always nice to hear good news of our local young people. The real rush is now on. The time has come to get out our list and see what is left to do. When all the material things are crossed off, we must take time to reflect on the true mea ning of Christmas. We consider it a great gift to be able to at tend church services on Christ mas. May God bless your house and our house at this glorious sea son of good will when no real man wishes misfortune on his fellow man. MERRY CHRISTMAS!, Marian Fives Are Winners Marian Central's basketball team defeated Addison Friday night 53-42 in a thrill packed game. Chris Toren, 6-4 center, led the way with 19 points, A1 May followed with 14. Led by Lee Murphy's 18 points, the Marian Sophs beat Driscoll 57-45. WARRIOR AGGRESSIVENESS forced 33 turnovers from the Zee- Bees. as McHenry won ltl third straight conference game. Above. Prazak and Miller succeed in their task as No. 11 Colbert makes an off balance pass. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) Just think -- a half century together! George and Margaret must be old fashioned. There should be more like them. Nice to hear from Mrs. Art ("Tippy") Klein that she is a regular reader of S.I.H. And it was also nice this week to learn from Mrs. Mau rice Granger that she is a White Sox fan. Sun. from 2:30 DEAN MARTIN BRIAN KEITH 'something A SWINGING i WESTERN By Fred Kusch Last Friday night the MCHS Warriors ran their conference won-lost record to 3-0 and maintain their first place tie with the North Chicago War- hawks and Barrington Bron cos in the NSC as they beat Zi- on Benton in Buckner Gym 62- 56. The Warriors again dis played an aggressive defensive effort as they made the Zee Bees turn the ball over 33 times. Rebounding as well as the de fense was a highlight of this game as Mark Bentz pulled down 26 "boards" settinganew school record. Cary Fenner contributed 16 as the Warriors out boarded their opponents 57- 44. The Warrior offensive at tack was also a very good ef fort. Three men scored in dou ble figures Bentz 18, Neiss, 14 and Miller 10. This fine over all attack provided the necessary punch to push the Warriors to victory. In victory the Warriors ag ain committed too many errors (15 violations) and again lack ed that killer instinct to really put the game on ice. This was especially noticeable as they frettered away a 14 point lead. On the bright side however the Warriors remained on top in the NC scramble and after the holidays will get back to the grind when they play in the Ho liday Tourney in Batavia, Dec. 27-30. Their first encoqnter will be against Yorkville Monday night Dec. 27 at at Batavia H.S. Box Score: Warriors 62 - Zion Bention 56 Mcllenry shooting - 42%; Zion Benton shooting - 35%. Last Friday night Lake County bombed McHenry County by 30 points. There is just no way McHenry can beat Oakton, right? Fortunately the games are played instead of just matching comparative scores to decide the winners. Bruce Harbecke, dim Mulvenna and company refused to believe they were the underdogs and knocked off the Oakton Raiders 93 to 86 in the Crystal Lake high school gym last Wednesday night, Dec. 8. They closed the gap in the last few minutes but couldn't catch the Scots. Leading the rebounding were Bruce Harbecke with 25 and Mark Hayes with 20. Harbecke also paced the scoring with 30 points, while Jim Mulvenna contributed 21 and Hayes 18. Next contest for the Scots will be at Triton Friday Dec. 10. Next home game will be a matinee performance at 2:30, Saturday, Dec. 18 in the Crystal Lake high school fieldhouse. BOX SCORES At Crystal Lake December 8,1971 McHenry fg ft Mulvenna, Jim 6 Thomas, Tom 5 Sequoits Warriors by Fred Kusch Even though Ken Ludwig's charges outplayed Antioch's Se quoits in every area except shooting last Saturday the War riors came out three points shy when the final buzzer sou nded. Antioch inched by the Warriors by 3 points 54-41 gi ving the Warriors their third loss of the season. In well played ball game both teams showed fans plenty of fine Nor thern Illinois basketball. The Warrior defense again was out standing as they used a tough man to man attack. The only man they couldn't stop was Scalp 54-51 Meiure who chalked up 25 points. Unfortunately the War rior offense boggfed down as they took 22 more shots from the field than did Antioch but could connect on only 3 more field goals then their oppon ents. The story of the game was told on the charity stripe how ever, as the Warriors connect ed on only 5-13 or 38% of their free throws. Shooting was de finitely the Warriors downfall. The victory increased their conference record to 4 and 0 and their overall record to 7 and 0. Led by 6'4" Bob Larsen, sharpshooting guard transfer from North Carolina State, the Warriors jumped to an early lead and were never headed. McHenry playing without the services of Tom Thomas, suffering from a back injury, could not match the jumping and rebounding of their opponents from River Grove. The Scots shot well as they hit 46 percent compared to 41 percent by Triton but the Crystal Lake lads could only manage to get off 65 shots while Triton had % attempts.
