\ SECTION 1-PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JAN. 5, 1972 Warriors Crush Yorkville Then Edged By Munifelein In Holiday Cage Tournament Woodstock Come on out and see the boys play ball. BOX SCORE Warriors - 85 Yorkville - 59 by Fred Kusch In probably one of their best efforts of the season Ken Ludwig's Warriors crushed Yorkville H S . a team highly touted in the pre-tournament prognostication. 85-59 The Warrior victory was highlighted hyv a fine team effort Defense again was excellent as it has been in virtually every Warrior victory this season, especially the Warrior zone press Offensively good shooting from the field and the free throw line plus good reboun ding assured a victory Rog Ludwig and Mark Bentz led Warrior scorers with 20 points apiece while Don Prazak and 0ar> Fenner contributed 15 and 11 respectively Mark Bentz. Rog Ludwig, and C.ary Fenner were singled T>ut by their coach for their fine efforts Mark had 20 points and 14 tough rebounds The Warriors committed too many fouls in the contest however when a team plays a tough hardnosed defense such as the Warriors did against Yorkville fouls must be ex pected The Warriors outstanding effort against the tough York ville squad enabled them to , advance to second round play in the c hampionship bracket of^ the tourney against Mundelein Orange and Black backers will remember that only about two weeks ago the Warriors nipped the Mustangs in a thrilling over-time victory at Buckner Gym Unfortunately for the Warrior cagemen, Mundelein was out for revenge and in another thrilling ball game the Mustang's turned the tables on MCHS and came out of the game a 72-70 victor The story of the bail game for the* Warriors again was an inconsistent offensive effort The Warrior defense again played brilliantly causing 28 Mustang turnovers usually enough, to provide any team with a victory However poor free throw shooting on the Warrior side and too many missed inside shots caused the downfall of the cajfers in this ball game Ron Miller and Randy Neiss were singled out for their ef forts m this ball game, as Neiss hit on 12 19 shots from 18;20feet j)ut and Miller zeroed in on 9 of 17 Unfortunately no one else cotild help out on offense Coach Ludv ig felt the Warriors played two real fine ball games in the tourney and in doing so gained some in valuable experience for the remainder of the tough NSC campaign The Warriors ap pear to be in fine shape physically and have riot yet peaked, in other Words they won't got stale and lose that edge needed in the final months i»f l lie season Also important to mention is the fact that the Warriors appear to be con s>u,niU improving and becoming a well-oiled, smooth basketball team Warrior fans have much to look forward to in the coming months. We think. Our ,pal. After manyv parties we are ready for a quiet week. Things will pick up starting next Sunday night with the big party at McHenry Country Club which will benefit the McHenry Area Rescue Squad. Another observation after watching all those games is that we see few end runs in modern football. Never one to enjoy straight ahead, up the middle football, we saw Michigan march down the field that way. But, they were stalled on the one and one- half yard line. r If you want to help this group of great people who are willing to help others (our number could be up any time), buy some tickets for the big event""" Every penny of the purchase price will be turned ovefl^to the Rescue Squad treasury. The Stanford-Michigan game was all defense in that the scoring thrills expected. Of course, the last minute win for Stanford (13-12) was a thriller. A small group will foot the ^Stanford's win saved their -man Ferguson from being a goat. Catching a kick in the end zone and being the victim of a 2- point safety seemed to be a mistake that would give Michigan the victory. Bowl parades were beautiful̂ and performances of many'." young people were great Uy'l behold. '% i Those Miami Dolphins are' only 6 years old, but they showed no respect for the* Baltimore Colts in the AFT* play-off. The Colts took all the statistics, but couldn't score.' That's enough football for a while. Fathers can turn the TV's back to the families. It is time to get back to high school sports. We print that schedule often enough to keep you posted. Everybody's theme during Christmas time was "Peace." But, most of us are thinking of nations promoting peace. Maybe peace and good will should start with each of us. Every little difference shouldn't mean war. The phone rang late Sunday afternoon and Harry Conway wished us a Happy New Year. Harry added that "Tinky" Meyer was celebrating her birthday (you can guess which one) and how about coming down to Old Bridge? Much to our surprise the place was packed with friends o£-"Tinky." Thought it was a mall shindig. 'Twas a party- Cheers and a table covered with food. Wouldn't we like to be celebrating our 39th tirthday! i£ti ii. uiecn ol JOJ-J Jl TUESDAY THIRTY-NINERS 12-21-71 Bitsy Schaefer, 175-467; Margaret Fleming, 444; Janice Pieroni, 470; Adeline Pedersen, 192-464; Cathly Schlitt, 207-497; Elsie Winkel, 184-191-513; Doris Diedrich, 436; Martie Raasch, 461; Helen Freund, 154. 12-28-71 Bitsy Schaefer, 462; Janice Pieroni, 193-454; Dorothy Freund, 495; Cammy Gaylord, 441; Claire Rosing, 455; Rosie Przetacznik, 437; Gail Madden, 484; Mary Beth Fuchs, 176; 178- 528.
