i PAGE 5-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 1972 You And Your, Pet By Raymond Minor, D.V.M. Manager of Veterinarian Services Norden Laboratories Is there a snake in your living room? A skunk in your family room? Don't laugh. In the past few years, there has been a considerable in crease in the number of exotic pets sharing American households. The number of reptiles, wild mammals and amphibians taping kept as pets is surprising. Monkeys, jungle cats, descented skunks, raccoons, snakes and alligators are among the more popular. If you are thinking of buying a pet and looking for something different - even exotic - then I suggest that you first consider a few factors. A large number of people who acquire exotic pets find out too.4 late they don't have the facilities for keeping the animals properly. I have found that frequently the pet owners have been ill advised and have an inadequate knowledge about the pet's health care, nutritional needs of lifestyle. Many exotic pets pose very serious health hazards to their owners. Skunks and raccoons are rabies threats. Monkeys do have transmissible diseases such as tuberculosis, infectious hepatitis, and intestinal in fections. Dr. Luther Fredrickson discussed a tuberculosis out break which occurred in lower primates in a Tennessee zoo during the thirteenth annual Midwest Interprofessional Seminar on Diseases Common to Animals and Man. He is the director of the veterinary medicine section of the Ten nessee Department of Public Health. The U.S. Public Health Service has reported salmonellosis being traced to an asymptomatic spider monkey in a pet shop in Seattle, Washington. Salmonellosis is an infection that causes violent diarrhea accompanied by cramps. A niother of five children managed the shop. All five children have experienced a diarrheal illness Last fall, a fatal case of human shigellosis associated with a spider monkey was reported in Connecticut. Shigellosis is one of the most common causes of acute diarrheal disease in man. Even pet turtles have been reported responsible for salmonellosis in people. In my practice, I have found several pet owners who developed emotional problems when their exotic pets grew from lovable young kittens to intractable and unmanageable jungle cats. Remember the movie, "Born Free" and the difficulty that pet loving family had in giving up the lioness it had nurtured from a cub? Do you think you will be able to part with that lovable pet when he becomes too big and tough to handle? Don't count on giving it to the local zoo. They might tell you, "Sorry, but we get so many offers of alligators, lions, skunks...and we don't have any room for them." Humane societies find it difficult, and often impossible, to find homes for such animals referred for adoption. The pet's nutritional needs vary. Some animals are car nivorous, others vegetarians. They won't stay healthy on th«K '* wrong diet. Some pets require special diets. I recall a man with a boa constrictor who found it dif ficult obtaining frozen mice in his hometown after the local pet store closed. The lifestyle of some of these pets may not agree with you. Do you know that the skunk does most of its sleeping during the day and can make enough noise to keep the ghosts awake when roaming through the house at night? Now, if you are still in terested in an exotic pet and have the patience and time to care for the animal properly, I suggest that you consult with your local veterinarian about the specific needs and characteristics of the animal you are interested in. Do this before you acquire the pet and your relationship with the animal will be lasting and enjoyable. Dr. Minor regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet owners. He suggests that readers consult their own veterinarians when their pets have problems. Richard Folz, of Indiana, certainly believes in delegating responsibilty to young people. The average age of the 80 men and women in his Commerce Department is only 28. And he prods them into taking night classes in Law School so they will be better qualified to solve future proglems. By: George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D. CASE N-557: Indiana's talented Lieut. Gov. Richard Folz one time invited me to hav6 lunch with him and some of his key staff members. "Dr. Crane," he smiled as we had a buffet meal in his private office, "did you ever hear the story about the Duncan Brothers?" I shook my head, so he gave me the following Hoosier narrative: "Bill and Charley Duncan stole a hog down in southern Indiana," he began. "But as they were driving over toward Evansville to sell him, they encountered a road block. "Instantly they^ surmised that the police were^keady after them because of \heir theft of the pig. "So Charley reached ovir in the back of the car and hauled the pig into the front seat. "Then they placed a hat on him, wrapped a coat around his shoulders, and set him upright between them. / "By this time, two policfe officers approached their car and demanded their names. "The officer on the right nudged the brother nearest him, so the boy gave his name as Charley Duncan. "Then the officer at the left asked the name of the driver, who said he was Bill Duncan. "Both officers now looked at the third occupant, sitting in the middle between Charley and Bill, and wanted to know who he was. "Charley and Bill then chimed in with, 'Oh, that's our younger brother.' "So the officer on the right then reached in and nudged the pig, dressed like a man. 'What's your name?' the policeman inquired. "The pig was startled at the rude jab in his ribs, so he went 'Oink,' whereupon the officers waved the car onward. "And as it was driving off, one of the policemen said to the other, 'That Oink Duncan was sure the ugliest of the three .brothers, wasn't he?' " Lieut. Gov. Folz thus shows he has a good sense of humor but he also has an eye for both beauty and efficiency.
