Pheasant Hunting Good On Public Areas In 1971 SPRINGFIELD,ILL.--Illinois pheasant hunters fared well on state managed public put-and- take areas during the 1971 sea son, according to Jim Lockart, supervisor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the Ill inois Department of Conserva tion. "We had 24,365 hunters make use of the seven areas this year," Lockart said. "They harvested a total of 39,966 birds for an average of 1.45 birds per hunter, per outing. However, the total was 1,713 birds less than the 1970 fig ure." Lockart said that over 49,000 pheasants were released on the areas this year and that slight ly more than 75 per cent of them were harvested. A breakdown of the public shooting areas and number of birds harvested at each area: Carlyle Lake, 8,021; Chain- O* Lakes, 2,263; Des Plaines, 8,500; Green River, 4,712; Ir oquois, 3,482; Richland County, 5,087; Shelby County, 4,901. will become a qualified umpire. Box 13, Park Ridge, Ill inois 60068. tenheimer, two of the many high class coaches at our various schools, accompanied eight senior basketball players to the Rotary meeting last week. Coach Ludwig showed films and explained in his com mentary that the game has patterns to follow. The pattern is there, but sometimes five other guys on the floor can spoil everything. The Ludwig-Partenheimer plan calls for a tough defense. They press hard and make the other team make mistakes. Of course, we have noted that our boys also get a lot of fouls when they get too enthusiastic on defensing. Much depends on how close the officials are calling the game. Coach Lydwig said that in the last three years the Warriors could have gone places if they had that one big man -- say about 6'7" or taller. Those are the. kind of games that make a losing coach wish he had majored in basket weaving. THE LONG REACH of LIbertyville'a Calanca was not quick enough as Mark Bentz of the Warriors gets his shot away for a two pointer. How can we ever thank the one who sent our name in for information on skiing. Just think! They can teach us to ski in 10 days ...all through a correspondence course. All we have to do is reply before a certain date-and send Ifioney! Further proof that people are gaining in common sense and understanding was in action last Thursday night when the McHenry Knights of Columbus played host to members of the McHenry Masonic Lodge. It was a fun-packed mixer and proved that good fellows should get together more often. Had a phone call from Pete Rothermel, who is down in Florida, last woek. Wondered if he should come home 'cause it was so hot down there. Told him to stay there - the sun was pretty strong up here, too. Of course, Pete had ben reading the papers and those Florida papers play up our cold weather. Pete told us of just coming from a visit with "Schmaltz". Seems that on this particular morning his pal had to stay inside. The sun must be terribly strong down there. Coaches Ludwig and Par- Harpsicoin? The harp first appeared on coins in the reign of Henry VIII. The first use of the harp on a flag is believed to be the banner flown in Ireland by Owen Roe O'Neill in 1645. Here is something to remember if you want to do your share in helping to clean up our environ ment : If rou can throw it into the garbage ran, then it doesn't be long in the sink drain. Special problem materials are: -- rooking fats: feed fat to the birds; -- coffee grounds: these can be added to compost piles or earthworm colonies, as can tea leares, vegetable scraps and peelings, and other table and cooking leftovers or scraps. Compost can then be used to fertilixe gardens, plants, and lawns. It's a simple rule to remember to help keep our water a little cleaner and purer - don't use sink drains as catch-ails. When you are selected as a cheerleader for the Milton College (Wis.) basketball team it is important to know something about the game. These five varsity cheerleaders demonstrate their dribbling techniques: Deborah Mell, sophomore, Mount Prospect, 111.; Wendy McComb, freshman, Wonder Lake, 111.; Rosemary Brehm, sophomore , Matteson, III.; Susan Meyer, sophomore, Milwaukee; and Jan Romer, freshman.
