From Esther Barkey, Rocky Point, N.Y.: I remember when we lived at 1469 Fifth Avenue, near Mount Morris Park in New York City. At this time there was no elec trie lights on Fifth Avenue. A man would come every night with a long pole to light the gas street lamps. I also recall a street car drawn by two horses. It crossed from east to west at 110th Strfeet and Fifth Avenue, where Central Park West starts. I remember sitting at the wa ter's edge on Fifth Avenue and dipping my feet into it while mother did her shopping at the Italian District, as First Avenue was then known. Today, there are a number of streets and wide avenues where the water once was. Many skyscrapers are there also, including the United Na tions building.
