Start gladioli now for early blooming Start planting this weekend it-you'like your gladioli as soon as possible. The actual time from plant ing until bloom varies from 65 9Qtjdays. Because gladioli put up just one spike a summer, space the plantings out at two or three week internals. This way you'll have cut gladioli in your home all summer long, especially if you keep planting up to mid- July. THE CORMS are planted 4 to 8 inches deep in trenchet, shallower in the clay loams of the northwest suburbs and deeper in the more sandy soil in the south Chicago suburbs. Spacing the bulbs is deter mined by how many you have. If you have a big garden and want to stretch your display, plant the corms 4 to 8 inches apart. On the other hand, if you have a small garden and want to develop the maximum amount of bloom, plant the bulbs shoulder to shoulder. Width of the rows should be Tips from Brookwood Garden Center Advice on Removing Rose Winter Wraps BY ART KOZELKA Chicago Tribune • REMOVING the winter wraps from the roses can be a joyous or frustrating expe rience, depending on how much "green" meets the eye. If protection was adequate, canes may need little prun ing to reach "green" or live wood, and this is what every rosarian hopes for after a hard winter. It means a strong, early start with good bloom potential. But tf the winter proved devastating, canes may have to be cut back drastically, perhaps within inches of the bud union, to eliminate dead wood. Naturally such plants will have some catching up to do. one and a half to two feet wide. This is wide enough so you can walk between them with a tiller. In any event, it always is satisfying to find that the plants do have live canes, however short they may be, rather than to discover that entire plants were winter killed and have to be re placed. Care of the rose beds be gins in earnest about this time. Emerging leaf buds in dicate that pruning is in or der. New roses with bare roots should go into the ground before the end of this month, but those purchased in containers can be planted at any time. Pruning usually is the first order of care, and follows removal of the plastic cones or soil mounds that provided the winter protection.
