Bids are to be taken later with the federal grant reimbursing the city for one half of the cost. The meeting recessed at 8:30 p.m. to allow for the called meeting of the Board of Local Improvements. Legal and engineering reports indicated that the petition and spreading of the roll on the Lakeland Park Special Assessment would be ready in three days for presentation to the court. Approval was given to taking a special census of McHenry's population at an overall estimated cost of $2,825. The official census in 1970 was 6,772. As there has been considerable growth since that time, plus the annexation of Country Club Estates, the Council reasoned that the increased allotment of State Motor Fuel Tax will more than justify the cost of the special census. The City Police department will have a "scrambler" system installed to prevent others from picking up police calls. Chief Espey reported that more efficient police work should result, giving as an example burglars being able, at present, to pick up calls on their radios. The system will be tried for three months on a rental basis, with privilege of applying rentals paid to the purchase price. Life guards at the beach will be provided with new suits and emblems to identify them. As the long meeting ad journed, Council members (although a bit tired) con cluded, with satisfaction, that many items of business had been disposed of in an orderly fashion. A company spokesman said most of the involvement was in the residential section, but a few industrial customers also were affected. He blamed the electricity stoppage to a deterioration of connections on the poles, which caused wires to burn. How can I remove the ugly-looking ring left on fabric by a cleaning fluid I was using on a stain? A. After letting the cleaning fluid dry thoroughly, hold the blemished area of the fabric over the steaming spout of a teakettle or steam iron until the stain disappears. Q. How can I keep flannels soft when washing them? A By adding a teaspoon of powdered borax to each quart of rinse water used. Q. How can I shrink woolens? A. Spread a wet sheet on an even surface. Open the woolen material completely and spread it over the wet shet. Now clip the selvage every few inches. Spread a second wet sheet over the woolen fabric, paUightly over the entire area, and let stand over night. Q! What can I do when the wax polish on my furniture begins to take on a streaky appearance? A. Probably it's time to remove that old wax which has become mixed with dirt and has collected on the surface. Mild soap and lukewarm water will usually do the job, but don't let the soap remain on the furniture any length of time. Be sure also to polish or rewax the furniture immediately after washing it. Q. How can I improvise a sleeve board for ironing? A Roll a terry cloth towel around your rolling pin. A sleeve will go over that little old rolling pin like a glove, the rolling pin turns as you go over each side of the sleeve, and a crease is prevented. Q. What is an easy way to mask the glass when I am painting window frames? A. Cut strips of newspaper two inches wide. Dip these strips into water so they are thoroughly wet, then apply them like masking tape to the window glass. . .no more paint to scrape off the panes. And you don't even have to remove the strips as they fall off the glass when they are dry. Q. What can I do about the green fungus that grows on the bottom and sides of my bird- bath? A. Pour out any excess water, then wet some paper towels and stick these to the sides and bottom of the bath. Pour some household bleach on the paper and let it stand for fifteen to twenty minutes. Then remove the paper and wash the bath. This treatment sometimes kills the fungus for as long as s ix weeks. Q. How can I insure the removal of lint when laun dering black garments? A. By making the final rinse one of vinegar and water in equal parts. Q. How can I replace a cracked or broken asphalt tile in my floor9 A. With a hammer, put a number of dents in the damaged tile. The tile will soon begin to curl up, either at the edges or where the crack is. Lift it out of position with a putty knife, carefully scrape up the old adhesive from the floor underneath, apply new mastic or cement, and then, after this becomes st icky to the touch , place down your new tile Q. How can I clean rusted or corroded metal surfaces quickly? A. An ordinary rubber eraser dipped into emery powder makes an effective scourer for cleaning off those rusted or corroded surfaces. In 17th century Boston, men were forbidden to kiss their wives in public on a Sunday. _ , * 0 I scftfE Using the McHenry Service Center P£T CENTER PETS THAT NEED A HOME OR ARt LOOKING FOR THEIR MASTER As a public service of the McHenry Plaindealer all ads run under "Pets That Need A Home" are Free. •The only requirements are: aThe animals are to be given away to good homes without charge, or you are trying to find the owner of a pet 'that has strayed into your possession.
