PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 1972 . Golf Classic Winners WALSH I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ "My" got a chance to take a crack at us in this space last week but didn't take fulW ad vantage. Some Cub fans would have given us a blast. McHENRY COUNTY'S Fourth Annual Insurance Youth Golf Classic was played on June 22, in very high winds and was won by Tim Crowther, of Crystal Lake, with tn 18 hole score of 76. Tim is shown in the picture above receiving his First Place Trophy from the Insurance Youth Golf Classic Local Chairman. Bob Rauman. Also shown with Tim. from right to left, are the four runners up,, 2nd place winner Gar> Shastal of McHenrv who garnered 2nd place honors with a 78; Larry Gallagher, also of McHenrv won the 3rd place slot with a sudden death playoff victory on the 2nd hole over Sieve Reff of Cary; 5th place was won by Mike Bauer of McHenry. These five boys now qualify to play in the State Insurance Youth Golf Classic which will be held in July in Joliet, Illinois. The ultimate goal of the five boys is to qualify for the National Tournament, which will be played in Wichita. Kansas from August 4 through the 8th. In Wichita the boys will be playing in an elimination tournament, with other top State Qualifiers from across the United States, in hopes of making the final M player cut and playing 2 rounds of golf with touring professionals such as Orville Moody, 'Torn Weiskopf, Julius Boros, Gay Brewer and Bobby Nichols. Paul Morenz Leads Well And Pump Past Carl's Thanks to Jack Yegge we had real good seats in Milwaukee's County Stadium, mezzanine - protected from the weather. It was cold up there in the north country, but we were dressed for football. To make one "mini- vacation" complete, the Sox broke out in a rash of hits and 8 runs in the eighth inning. That was fun! " The Brewers have some real good ballplayers, but must build to strengthen some spots. by Jerry Miller On Tuesday evening, June 20,' Hettermann's beat Old Bridge by a score of 16 to 6 Hettermann's got off to a quick start with six runs in the first inning, to only one run for Old Bridge. D. Hiller, W. Hiller, M. Bentz, and R. Wakitsch all had 3 hits for Hettermanns I Spasavich had 2 hits for Old Bridge Old Bridge now will have to get things together and start preparing for second round play. On Thursday night three games were played, and in the first contest Bavarian Haus slipped past Parkview 7 to 6. Parkview led 6 to 5 at the end of 61* innings of play, and things looked bad for Bavarian Haus. With the bases loaded and one out, Denny Smith came to bat and delivered a two run single up the middle to win the game for Bavarian Haus. Parkview played the best they have all year, and almost won, so things are starting to look better for them. In the second game McHenry County Well and Pump beat Carl's 11 to 7. P. Morenz played a great game for Well & Pump as he collected 3 hits, a home run, a triple and a single. He also drove in 4 runs. C. Newkirk had 3 hits for Carl's, but it wasn't enough. In the third game of night, which was a make up game, Mer's Beach beat Jake's 4 to 3. Miller and Fagiano had 2 hits apiece for Mer's. R. Jaeger, and D. Schaefer also had 2 hits apiece for Jake's This week's player of the week is Paul Morenz, who led Well and Pump past Carl's. In the game Paul had a homerun, a triple, a single, and 4 RBI'S. Paul now has climbed up among the top io hitters with his 3 hits against Carl's. That's a friendly place to visit. From the minute we reached the park, everybody - ticket sellers, ticket takers, ushers, food dispensers, fans -- yep - everybody was friendly and courteous Would like to go back YMCA cneil more fun than .. in Woodttock on ClavStreet;in McHenry in the McHenry Market Place DISCOUNT ON IARGE CHICKEN ORDERS Sport Shorts j WOOOOOOOOOB Swim instruction classes for boys and girls, age 7 years old and up, are eligible to register for swimming instruction classes that begin on Wed nesday, July 5. The woman visitor dash ed angrily up to the bee k e e p e r a n d c o m p l a i n e d , "One of your bees stung me, I want you to do some thing about i t ." "Certainly, madam," said the beekeeper soothingly. "Just show me which bee it was and I ' l l have i t pun ished." And to think we were ready to trade Richie for a Cub bat boy when he was holding out. We sat beside a fellow froijj Chicago who had all the an-' swers. He called all the plays and both managers were "looney" in his book. That's baseball. The fan in the stands knows more than the manager. The difference is that the manager is paid 40 thousand bucks for not knowing as much as the other guy. The Brewer bat boy brought out a kneeling pad for the batter on deck and one for himself. Noticed they didn't furnish such comforts for the Sox. Brewer pitchers were wheeled in from the bull pen in NIGHT SHIFT PRESS BRAKE (Experienced) SETUP & OPERATE Must be able to read blueprints and change dies for various gauge metals. Young Terry Forster (20 years old) came in to pitch the last two innings for the Sox. He's a real flame thrower. They passed out cards for fans to vote for their All-Star game selections and the an nouncer said, "vote as often as you please". That doesn't seem right. Talk about stuffing the ballot box! , On our way home through small towns we saw a revolving barber pole - a real antique. Also saw a big red ball in front of the fire station in Sauk- ville. Listening to the car radio Thursday, we heard an an nouncement that a group from McHenry Recreation was at tending the game. When we arrived home we met the Milton Olsons of Clement Lodge, both Sox fans. Mrs. Olson watched the game the night before but got disgusted and went to bed before that 8-run outburst. That should teach her! Bill Nye and his wife went to see Wilbur Wood pitch twice - and he lost both games. We are trying to get them to switch to the Cubs. Mike Janik has been recommended by Eastern Illinois University Athletic Director Tom Katsimpalis for a letter award in baseball. We'll be watching results. Clyde piackwell left a Trib clipping and this note with one pf the girls in Ye Olde Plain- dealer office: "Looks like you took your Lucky Rabbit's Foot with you to Milwaukee - or something "Lucky". We took our wife, Clyde. Squirrel Season Dates Squirrel hunting season dates have been announced by Jim Lockart, supervisor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the Illinois Department of Conservation. The southern zone dates are from sunrise August 1 to sunset November 15. Northern zone hunters may hunt squirrels from September 1 to November 15. All dates are inclusive and hunting hours will run from sunrise to sunset each day. U.S. Route 36 will separate the northern zone from the southern zone. Hunters may take five squirrels a day and retain ten in possession after opening day, Lockart said. On opening day, the possession limit is five squirrels. McHENRY YOUTH LEAGUE \ Had a visit with Frank Poledna, of McCullom ike, the other day. Frank is 81 years old now, but gets a sparkle in his eye when he looks back to the days - 50 years ago - when he was a catcher for the Cincinnati Reds. Didn't get around in time for the entire band concert Thursday night, but did hear "Biff" Meyer sing a couple of songs. He went over big with the crowd as hands clapped and horns tooted. "Meanderin' Mary", former Plaindealer columnist, is back in town for a visit. Our visit with her was short, but may be resumed. "NITE OWLS" the LAMPLIGHTER CAFE NOW OPEN 11p.m. Mon. thru Sat. Front Street McHtniy TeL 385-0403 IS CLIFFORD BOYD too small to play football? At 2tS pounds Boyd was told he was not big enough before he went to college and now this former Wofford College football star has been told the same thing by the National Football League. He is entering the training camp of the Lake County Rifles professional football team to see if he can make it with this top flight minor league team and eventually move up into the NFL. •» Hunters Asked To Cooperate In Woodcock Survey First I must make an apology to the Orioles and the Tigers, as I reported their game was rained out last Tuesday the 20th. Well, it was played and a thrilling game it was. The Orioles went into the 7th win ning, but Ken Ludwig took care of that with a grand slam home run to win for the Tigers. Brian Nuss was the winning pitcher, losing pitcher Tom Jacobson. Final score <*-7. Wednesday put the Cards and Sox together and the Cards came up winners 11 to 0. Dave Wickencamp went all the way for the Cards, pitching a NO HITTER for the victory. Bill Rowe started for the Sox and took the loss. Jeff Damiani hit his first homerun of the season. Thursday the Mets and Orioles played and the Mets won 9-2. Dale Urbanski started for the Mets and went all the way to pick up the victory, and Dale helped his own cause as he hit a homerun with two mates aboard. Tom Amann took the loss for the Orioles. The Cards and Braves went at it Friday with Steve Whitehead going for the Cards and Bill Brogan for the Braves. Illinois hunters who bag woodcocks annually are being asked to submit their names and addresses to the Illinois Department of Conservation to help the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in a study of the bird. "Because woodcocks are a migratory bird they come under Federal, rather than state, jurisdiction," said Jim Lickart, supervisor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the Illinois Department of Conservation. "Hunters who submit their names will be sent postage paid envelopes by the Federal agency in which they will be asked to submit one wing from each woodcock they bag during the hunting season. The wings will be used for sexing and aging in the study." Woodcocks migrating through Illinois generally frequent bottomland areas where they can feed on ear thworms. They are slightly larger than a quail with an exceptionally long beak. Their coloring is brown, which resembles dead leaves. They have an odd flight pattern, in that they will flush and fly a short distance and then land again. The bird is generally taken in Illinois only during the first few days of the season," Lockart said. "They have usually passed through the state by the time the ground freezes." Hunters wishing to cooperate in the study should send name and address to: Department of Conservation, Division of Wildlife Resources, 602 State Office Building, Springfield, Illinois 62706. Kevin Haley First To Run 500 Miles The first member of the 1972 McHenry high school cross country team to run 500 miles is senior Kevin Haley, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Haley, 3915 W. Maple, McHenry. Kevin , a 1971 Cross Country letterman is not stopping at 500 miles, but is continuing on to reach his goal of 1000 miles this summer. Other team members are not far behind Haley and should be reaching their goal of 500 miles soon. M.C.H.S. Cross Country boys who run during the summer are called "pluggers", because their running is done on their own in preparation for the fall season which starts Aug. 23. The Cards won 14 to 7. The Braves got a homerun from Bill Brogan and Dave Wickenkamp hit one for the Cards. The Braves ran into trouble in the seventh when they were the victims of a TRIPLE PLAY to end the game. Steve Whitehead was the winning pitcher, Bill Brogan the loser. Sunday saw the Braves come back after their loss Friday to defeat the Orioles 6-5. Mike Tonyan started for the Braves and was relieved in the 3rd by! Larry Oeffling who picked up the victory. Mike Tonyan hit two homeruns, Bill Brogan hit o n e f o r t h e B r a v e s / T o m Jacobson hit one for the Orioles, but the big play of the game was the steal of home by Mike Tonyan in the 7th to win the game. In the second game Sunday the Mets and Tigers played, Mets winning 10-4. Joe Knaack started for the Mets and picked up the victory. Bill Moer- schbaecher started for the Tigers and took the loss. In the third game the Sox and Giants met with the Sox win ning 10-2. Kenny Lester pitched his regular fine ball game and came up the winner. Rich Bender started for the Giants and ran into trouble in the first inning as he loaded the bases and Tommy Ludwig hit a grand slam homerun.
