We well remember Fred < Heide coming to see vus for publicity to promote the big day. There were several years of promotion, then the crowd got so big that promotion wasn't necessary. We remember joining Monsignor Nix and Glenny Wattles for dinner on the porch of the old club house on Hookey Day. We had some fun. * Now.comes the annual event next Wednesday. We won't be playing Hookey, but am pleased with an invitation to join the crowd at dinner. We aren't much with a golf stick but do right well with a knife and fork. Rain came down on -- , Republican Day at McHenry Country Club Wednesday. Who Anybody know the year of the said somethinc about^. first "Hookey Day"? How said something Democratic weather? Dogs of all sizes and breeds ranging from little Chihuahuas to giant Irish Wolfhounds and even the unidentifiable common mutt whose owners have trained diligently with them will compete in a series of obedience exercises that are designed to test not only the dog's accuracy, but its willingness to perform. Competition ranges from the very elementary in which dogs are required to keep pace along side their masters, both on and off leash, through a varied walking pattern called out by a judge who scores the per formance, while dogs in the more advanced classes are required to go over high jumps, bar jumps and broad jumps as well as retrieve dumb-bells, demonstrate their ability in scent identification and response to silent hand signals, along with many, many other exercises. Versatility class, for example, is a test designed for the super-smart performers. mmm i t • *«.m TWENTY-THREE boys and girls received swimming award cards and emblems In recognition «f their ability to meet YMCA aquatic standards of achievement at the inclusion of the first two weeks of swimming instruction classes held at Thunderbird Farm on US 14. northwest of Cary. There are additional lessons beginning on July 18 and on August 1. Youth in the 9 a.m. class that received cards and emblems are pictured, left to right. Fish - Mike Riley of Crystal Lake and Krista Kaefer of Wonder Lake, Minnow - Steve Keating of Algonquin and Billy Berghoff of Crystal Lake. A real challenge awaits each entry^ as the surprise in structions are drawn from sealed envelopes. Even the judge doesn't know what the required exercise will be until the envelope is opened. No amount of rehearsal can prepare a dog for this event. Another event, Switch class, requires the dogs and trainers entered to exchange partners to see how the dog \yill perform with a strange handler. This one is always full of surprises and laughs. Besides the events for the individual dog there are special classes for brace and team competition as well. You can watch of this interesting and entertaining display of talent and ability if you plan on attending the Illini Obedience association Fun Match, a non-profit event which is being held July 23 in Woodstock, at the McHenry County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 8 a.m. In addition to the more than 400 performing dogs that are expected from all over the country there'll be pic nicking and games for the children, with an abundance of prizes. Food and refreshments are obtainable at the show, or bring your own if you so prefer. Also, if you'd rather be an exhibitor than a spectator and vyou think your dog is ready to compete, you can enter the match by contacting Mrs. Dorothy Vettel at 312-896-4425. Climbing Fish? A tropical fish called the mud- skipper climbs trees. A lot of busy people still make The Silly Little Mistake of placing station-to-station Long Distance calls through the Operator-- instead of dialing direct. So, please, break your long-standing rule of not offering advice and remind him that he can save money by dialing the number himself on out-of-state calls -- anywhere in the U.S., except Alaska and Hawaii. 4 It could be the beginning of a beautiful new relationship.
