ZEUNDA BENNETT Seventeen University of Illinois counselors participated in the Chanute Base Counseling center orientation .recently, including Zelinda Bennett of McHenry. The purpose was to provide counselors with the necessary knowledge about the base and its personnel so they may do an effective job of counseling at the center. The counselors all have master's degrees in the field of counseling and are working toward Ph. D's or other ad vanced specialized degrees in guidance and counseling. The counselors experience at the center is called a "prac- ticum", which is similar to an internship in other professions. Services offered would include marriage counseling, personal and family, vocational- education and testing. The services of many professions are used also. Anyone associated with Chanute can use this facility, including military and civilian personnel and their depen dents. Officials of the Illinois Motor Vehicle Law£commission have attempted to clarify apparent misunderstandings among ambulance operators in rural downstate concerning alleged new restrictions upon their operation. Four state legislators, who are leaders of the bipartisan commission, pointed out that many rural ambulance operators mistakenly believe laws were passed in the recent session of the General Assembly whi^ would in crease the cost of their operation. / The legislators r are Representatives Pete Pappas, (R-Rock Island), and Robert Craig, (D-Indianola), co- chairmen of the commission; Rep. Lewis Markert, (D-Mt. Sterling), chairman of the commission's Ambulance Study sub-committee; and Senator Donald Carpentier, (R- East JVfoHne), vice-chairman of the lull commission. The four lawmakers issued the following joint statement in an att^fnpt to clarify the misunderstandings: "Residents of most small communities and rural areas of this state are faced with a loss of vitally needed ambulance service, traditionally rendered by local funeral directors and, in some cases, volunteer organization. "Emergencies, accidents and other medical problems requiring the use of am bulances naturally occur much less frequently in sparsely populated areas than in populous urban regions. But they do occur, and when they do, people need " ambulance service immediately. Un fortunately, that service in many rural areas is insufficient to meet the needs of the citizenry. > "Studies indicate that am bulance service in rural areas is disappearing from the An^erican scene. At a time when the current level of service needs to be maintained or even raised, the number of rural ambulance operators quitting the business is growing. "An ongoing study by the commission indicates that a sizable percentage of such operators have quit - or are "^considering quitting - because they cannot afford increasing Air Medal Presented To J.D. Campbell JAMES D CAMPBELL Sp-4 James D. Campbell has just received the Air Medal with "V" device from the Army for action in Vietna^n. The citation reads, in part: "For heroism while par ticipating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam. Sp-4 Campbell distinguished himself by valorous actions Nov. 1, 1971, while serving as the .50 caliber machine gunner on a helicopter with "F" troop, 8th cavalry. "On that date, Sp. Campbell was flying a "Nighthawk" mission in search of enemy activity in Quang Nam province when his aircraft received intense automatic weapons fire from two position^ Specialist Campbell immediately engaged the enemy positions with devastating volume of highly accurate suppressive fire. The enemy retaliated by opening fire on the aircraft from several more locations, damaging the aircraft and forcing it to return to base for repairs. "With complete disregard for his own personal safety. Specialist Campbell volunteered to return to the area of contact in another aircraft. Through his timely and courageous actions the enemy locations were ef fectively engaged until they ceased to pose a threat to friendly forces." The young serviceman's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Campbell, 2608 W. Baldwin, McHenry. LOSE WEidm OR MONEY BACK Odrinex can help you become tne trim slim person you want to be. "There appears to be a misconception among some operators that the recent session of the legislature adopted laws which would force them to purchase new and expensive equipment, to greatly upgrade standards for employees and to provide skilled employees for around- the-clock service. "We want to emphasize that no such laws were passed, though it is true that several bills were introduced which if enacted would have initiated such requirements. "The commission wishes to assure these financially hard- pressed ambulance operators that they may continue to operate their businesses exactly as they have in the past. There are no new requirements - state or federal. "In the months ahead, this commission and its Ambulance sub-committee will continue to research the problem of providing to the rural public an adequate system of ambulance service. "In the near future, the sub committee will hold a series of public hearings in the field. We will meet throughout downstate in an attempt to come up with solutions acceptable to those who provide ambulance service as well as to the needs of the general public. "Individuals or groups in terested in attending these hearings are encouraged to do so. We would like to have testimony from as many citizens as possible, in order to benefit from their thinking and ideas. For more information, write Representative Pappas, in care of the Motor Vehicle Laws Commission, State Capitol, Springfield. * "Hopefully, we will be able next year to translate the results of our hearings and research into legislation that effectively addresses itself to the problem."
