PAGE 6-rLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1972 EARL WALSH Just home from the "Hookey Day" dinner at McHenry Country Club. And thank you John Busscher for the kind invitation. , With a column to write before the sandman comes, we left early. Still had time enough to meet a lot of old friends and make some new acquaintances. First person we met upon entering the front door was our long time friend, A1 Purvey. "M.-.tr" and Charlie Diedrich were next. They do much to keep the course in shape. A1 called us the other day to say "Hookey Day" started in the 40's. He remembered that members of the Woodstock Club and the McHenry group used to go back and forth to play golf and hookey. Didn't remember that part of the golf history. John Busscher had three of his four sons with him - Jim, Jay and Dave. Jon Meyer came over to the table to greet Dave and recall their days when both attended Quincy College. Man, are those Busscher boys big! (Not to mention Jon). So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR J Deer Season RepOrtS Long May It Wave! This scene raised the curtain for the start of the water ski show at the McHenry city beach last Sunday to highlight Marine Festival day. With considerable controversy of late over the fate of the National An them, it was most appropriate to start the important Sunday event with a display of the American flag. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Art Beck was chairman of the event and handled everything in good style. Six Illinois counties have reached their quotas in shotgun deer hunting permits, ac cording to Jack Calhoun, leader of the deer project for the Illinois Department of Con servation. This brings the total to 28 counties which have sold all permits allotted. Counties which closed in the southern third of the state were Effingham, Jasper, Monroe, Union and Williamson. Han cock County in central Illinois was also closed. Counties which were closed previously were: Carroll, Grundy, Jo Daviess, LaSalle, Marshall and McHenry in northern Illinois; Clark, DeWitt, Fulton, McLean, Moultrie, Peoria, Shelby, Tazewell and Woodford in the central part of the state; and Clay, Clinton, Crawford, Fayette, Johnson, st. Clair and Wayne counties in southern Illinois. Over 39,000 permits have been received by the Depart ment to date. 2,000 of these permits were for bow hunting. The shotgun season will take place Nov. 17, 18 and 19, and Dec. 8, 9 and 10. All 102 Illinois counties are open to bow hunters. The bow season runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 12, Nov. 20 through Dec. 3, and Dec. 11 through Dec. 31 in counties open for shotgun hunters. All other counties will be open Oct. 1 through Dec. 31. Here it is All Star time and what a group of All Stars we have this year. Last Tuesday the managers of each team met and picked the All Stars in three age groups, 15 year" olds, 14 year olds, and 13 year olds. We had a great group of young men to choose from this year. The 14 year olds are as follows: Rick GiUaertson, Card's, Mike Winters, Cubs, Bill Nelson, Sox, Knox, Giants, Bill Brogan, Braves, B. Blankenhorn, Tigers, R. Jacobson, Orioles, Dale Urbanski, Mets, Rick Mai, Cards, Bill Rowe, Sox, Lee Snyder, ,Cubs, Casey Cox, Tigers, K. Burke, Orioles, Bob Hromec, Giants. These young men were picked by their coaches to represent their team on the All Star squad. Aug. 6. These boys and the cither two teams can be seen ^t/V.F.W. Park playing outside teams. Come out and see them and yell for your neighborhood boy. He will be glad to see you. » The other two squads will appear in the next issue. In a ball game played last week the Cubs and Mets played Saturday with the Cubs winning 3-0. Mike Winters pitched a strong game for the Cubs, going all the way and getting the victory over Dale Urbanski. The big blow and all the runs needed was a two run homer by Terry Larkin. The Monday game was a very big game between No. 1 and No. 2. The Cards and Braves played a 4-1 game with the Cards winning to stay No. 1. Dave Wickenkamp pitched and hit his team to victory. Dave went all the way and hit a 3 run homer in the first to win. Mike Tonyan pitched a good game, but took the loss. It looks like the year for the Cards. i BEING A PART of the McHenry Marine Festival is serious business for these two young ladies. They are a part of the Chicagoland Water Ski Assn., which performed the water ski show Sunday, July 23 at Riverside Park. April Hardt is 6 years old and the daughter of Dick and Arlene Hardt who have participated in many McHenry water ski shows. Leslie Lauzon is 7 years old and the daughter of Joan and JkCLauzon also show participants. Mr. Lauzon held the distinguished title of Coach of the World Water Ski Team which competed in Spain representing the U.S.A. in September of 1971. These young ladies are no strangers to the water and started learning at the ripe old age of three on a surf board on which they could stand and get the feel of being pulled through the water behind a boat. From then on it was a lot of patience, determination and encouragement to try two skis. Both girls have taken dancing lessons, swim well and make adult snow skiers jealous on the ski slopes in winter. April is in first grade in the Montes^ri School system and lives in Glenview. Leslie is in second grade, attends Oak Ridge School and lives in Palos Hills. Put a little fun into your life, try water skiing! B.
