Results show an increase fof pheas ant and rabbits over last "year. Quail was about the same and doves showing a slight decrease. "The report compiled by Bill Preno and Johff Slachter, bi ologists in charge of population studies and trends on small upland game for the department," said Jin\ Lockart, supervisor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the Department of Conservation. "Over 65 routes were covered by biologists to compare the popula tions of other years. These co.mts assist in determining the type of hunting season we can expect and thereby set bag limits accordingly." The pheasant population showed a 25 to 30 per cent increase of hens from 1971. The major pheas ant range showed a 40 per cent increase. Just south of the major range there was about the same number of hens, which is a 30 per cent increase above the 15-year average. The far north also showed about the same number as last year, which is a 25 per cent in crease over the past 15 years. Over all the pheasant population is be tween five and 10 per cent above the 15-year average and is ap proaching the high of 1962-1964. The counts indicate there are 3.2 hens per cock. Southern Illinois showed a 20 to 30 per cent increase in the rabbit population from last year. Route counts in central Illinois show a slight decrease in the population as did the northern counts. Statewide the number of breeding rabbits is about 20 per cent higher than in 1971. It is at least 10 to 15 per Cent below the 14-year (1956-1969) average. Quail population is about the same. The department released 14,000 game farm turkeys prior to 1959 hoping they would establish them selves and take on the characteris tics of wild birds. However, no wild flock was established from the releases. "Beginning in 1959 we began receiving native wild turkeys from other states to stock in Illinois," said Jack Calhoun, leader of the turkey project for the department. "A total of 65 birds were released in the Shawnee National Forest. Success was not always immediate, or overwhelming, but all releases have persisted and we now have a ' huntable flock in Alexander, Jackson, Pope and Union counties." Turkeys have a daily range of several miles, and an even larger annual range. Birds will seek the habitat of their choice, which may or may not be the area where they were released. From the I l l inois Departmenf of Conservation Wild Turkeys Spring wild turkey hunts have stirred up considerable interest in stocking the birds in more coun ties of the state. Clubs and land owners have approached the Illi nois Department of Conservation requesting wild birds to stock on their properties. "We cannot provide wild turkeys simply because we do not have them," said Jim Lockart, super visor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the department. "The only source we have are those we live trap in the counties which now have the birds. "Our policy is to trap or acquire wild birds to stock all public lands suitable for raising turkeys. When this job is complete, consideration can be given to private lands on the basis of available area, interest of local residents and the amount of public usage they will allow. The hunter has paid the bill for couraging the interest of Illinois sportsmen in the wild turkey, but points out that most of the state is not suitable turkey range." Cal houn stated. "A large timberland is necessary and these areas simply do not exist in many sections of the state. "We are discouraging the release of game farm, or domesticated birds. They are reservoirs of dis ease and do not become wild birds. In areas where wild birds are present, these game farm birds serve to adversely affect the geno type, or wildness, of the bird if they interbreed. The only way we can have wild turkeys is to stock truly wild birds." pairttfotesls- Saturday Monday Saturday GIVE A HOOT.
