PAGE 18-PLAINDELAEk-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1972 Growth In New Loans Reported By Land Bank Growth in total loans out standing and in new loans for the past year were reported to farmers at the annual meeting of the Federal Land Bank association of Woodstock last week. New loans closed for the year ending last June 30 totaled forty-five at a value of $2,420,650 compared with a value of $2,040,420 for the year earlier. Mortgage loans out standing totals $15,148,941, Robert Coots, manager, reported during his annual report. Reelected to the board were Ed Kirchhoff, Harvard dairy farmer, and Frank Meyers, Belvidere grain farmer. The FLBA of Woodstock serves farmers in Boone, McHenry "SluTd Lake counties with long- term loans. Kirchhoff owns and operates a 300-acre dairy farm and milks 40 cows. He has served on both the board and the Agriculture Advisory council for the Harvard school district, the Chemung township ASCS committee and one term on the FLBS board. Meyers owns and operates a 520-acre grain farm southeast of Belvidere. In ^ the re-organization meeting, officers were reelected: Kenneth Denman, Lake Villa, president; and Don Stoxen, Harvard, vice- president. Fifth board member is Gene Simes, Hebron. Discussing changes in the organization's business, Coots said he anticipates growth to come as a result of new legislation in Washington. One change now permits federal land banks to loan up to 80 per cent on appraised value. Another change permits loans to residents in rural communities of 2,500 and under. Attractive features have been recent innovations that included open end loans oh farm property and construction loans on new homes as farmers build them. "Variable interest rate has been another asset in our service to farmers," sum marized Coots. "Since it went ,into effect two years ago, any change has been a decrease in rates farmers had to pay which is a savings in money costs for our borrowers." Featured speaker was W.H. Emmanuel, administrator for the Cambria-Friesland schools in Wisconsin. Discussing "The American Farmer and His Flag," he cited a rating scale developed in a poll of Congressmen based on what the Congressmen felt were the ten most vital matters that showed whether or not the legislator placed the best in terests of the United States foremost. He said he was pleased to note that the Congressman serving Lake and McHenry counties -Cong. Robert McClory-rated 100 per cent on the scale. He said in contrast he could cite some Wisconsin legislators who rated near zero. EQUIPMENT ON ROADWAYS One-third of all tractor- caused deaths occur on public roads. As Illinois farms become larger and more mechanized, farmers fin'd themselves spending more and more time moving field equipment on public highways. The following precautions are for farmers who drive their farm machinery on public roads: -If possible, plan your farm work to reduce the amount of time you must spend on public roads. .- • -Come to a full stop when entering a highway and do not proceed until the way is clear. Stay on your own side of the road. -Be sure you have proper lighting if you must take tractors and equipment on public roads at dusk or after dark. -An SMV (slow moving vehicle) emblem mounted on the rear of your vehicle can be seen from 500 feet, day or night. It cautions approaching motorists that you are moving at less than 25 miles per hour and that they should slow down. Keep in mind, however, that motorists should not be ex pected to assume all respon sibility for highway safety. CITE CONGRESSMAN The Presidential Classroom for Young Americans has presented an outstanding service award to Congressman Robert McClory. The award, presented pursuant to action of the organization's board of directors, is in recognition of Congressman McClory's participation in Washington at a Presidential Classroom discussion regarding work of the United States House of Representatives. The bi partisan recognition followed - "Hot Spots" "Hot spots" in the earth's crust, where steam or hot water rise to the surface through fissures, pre viously were the only known areas where geothermal heat could be tapped to provide elec tric power. Thermal mapping now permits geologists to locate addi tional sources that can be reached by drilling. the Presidential Classroom seminar held earlier this year which Congressman McClory attended and in which he took an active part.
