Watch Gold Medal Skipper If you happen to be on Pistakee Lake most any time this coming Saturday and Sunday, September 16 and 17, look for a racing sail boat with the identifying number on its sail "1-1". The skipper will be Harry "Buddy" Melges, Jr., from Lake Geneva. Buddy is the U.S. gold medal winner in the recently com pleted Olympics, in which he with Soling competed Yacht. He is part of the annual Blue Chip Regatta now in its 13th year and annually staged by Pistakee Yacht Club. Twenty- five other champion skippers will compete in the outstanding racing event. £ £ SPORTS FANS! I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brought To You By John Jepsen Of all the pro football ims, which one do you Ithink has finished in first {place the most different |years?...The answer is the IC leveland Browns.. They've finished in first place 18 different seasons. 1 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Now comes the McHenry Country Club with a "Grand fathers Tournament" which is reported in this issue as "open to all Grandpops with an established handicap". Don't worry about Grand- pops. They all have handicaps SAY IT ISN'T SO - Had a phone call from a fellow who doesn't want us to use his name. He insists that one McHenry school bus has McHenry printed on the side -- "M-C-H-E-N-E-R-Y." These are a few of the John- sburg Old Timers who have indicated that they will make their appearance Sept. 24: Wally Smith, Harry Freund, Bud Meyers, Si Meyers, Norb Smith, Stan Freund, Art Jackson, Bud Miller, Bill Kreutzer, Dick Hiller, Tom Oeffling, Butch Nowak. All Old Timers are invited. We are anxious to get a list of McHenry players. Want to print those names in the first issue next week. A conflict will keep us from seeing that game and are sorry as all get out. Lloyd Freund offered us a chance to join the announcer. We are missing a great chance to tell some yarns of days gone by. Lloyd didn't offer us a chance as pinch runner for those old boys. Those Pittsburg Pirates are really something. They must have more .300 batters than all the rest of the teams in their division. McHenry Country Club In the fifth round play in the Past Presidents' Tournament held at the club on Sunday, Sept. 10: Class A winners were, Ted Spengel, Ben Chelini, Ed Buss, Chris Newkirk, John Falcon, Art Beck, Buzz Frett and Ron Wilkins. Ted Spengel has been improving all season and should give Ben Chelini a real battle. Chris Newkirk, after his victory over Art Jackson last Sunday, certainly has another tough battle on his hands as he plays Ed Buss. Class B winners were Harold Jensen, Dick Freund, Jack Smithson, Hal Nilles, Dick Turner, Bud Elberson and Ron Waytula. In Class C, Roger Collins, Fred Ballstaedt, John McClory, Ed Bishoff, Rich Smith, Tom Bolger, Bob Blaney and Chuck Pyles were winners. Doc Donnelly, Tom Burke, Doc Cavelli and Chuck Pease were victorious in Class D. Along with second round play in the Past Presidents' Tourn. there will also be a Grand fathers Tournament open to all Grandpops with an established handicap. Members should sign up with Vale Adams in the Pro Shop for this tournament. THIS WORLD( OF OURS Tint often, our attitude ha* been - use an item and throw it atcay. Warriors To Open Season Saturday At Schaumburg Not many holdouts for that Old Timers baseball game at Johnsburg on Sunday, Sept. 24. And, of all the pro foot ball teams today in the National and American Football Conferences , which ones have NEVER finished in first place in their divisions at the end of any season? Tliere are only four teams that have • never finished first...Pitt- J sburg, Atlanta, New Or- | leans and Denver. Here's a zany one from • pro football...Did you know • a team could win only ONE J game and still finish in • first place!...How is this I possible? ...... A National! Football League team with • 1 win and 13 ties in a 14j| game schedule, for exam ple, would finish first ov er a team that won 13 games and lost 1 because the lea gues go by percentage only --and the team with one win, 0 losses and 13 ties would have a 1.000 per centage (ties don't count) _ while the team with 13| wins and 1 loss would haven a percentage of .929 andl would finish second. If some younger Old Timers joins the ranks, they will let 'em run. In one game they had five .300 hitters in the line-up and called on two more from the bench to pinch hit. Where do they find 'em? As you know, the game will be a part of the Johnsburg Community Club 50th An niversary program. McHenry Hospital and Memorial Hospital at Wood stock have sent out pleas. Last week we heard of a man being ready for surgery and no blood (of his type) available. Would you believe - lab workers gave blood to relieve the situation. That's the old spirit!" And -- a hospital story: Waking up after an operation the patient found the blinds of her room drawn and she asked the nurse why. "Well," explained the nurse, "there's a big fire across the street and we didn't want you to wake up and think the operation had failed ". By Dick Rabbitt Ccach Bill Day's . 1972 Fighting Warriors open their season tomorrow at Schaumburg. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. This is the' second and probably last meeting between the two schools, as next year a new conference will be formed, and a full nine game conference schedule will be in effect. Last year the 'Warriors won with ease and started them on to a very successful 6 and 2 season. Let's hope that tomorrow will be another springboard to a successful season. Coach Day will not name his starting line-up until kick-off time, but he has boys vying for all positions. Bentz, Mauch, and Staley are still contending back spot. In the halfback slot Grover, Ludwig, Knaack and Isaacs (foreign exchange student from Africa) are all awaiting the nod. At fullback Rick Freund and Scott Lun- delius are in great competition. At tight end Mroz and Truckenbrod. At split end Jim Grabowski is battling Bob Habich, and here because of past performances Habich should get the nod. Tackles Cunat, Gregory, Heald ami Mowrer should all see plenty of action. Guards Whitehead, Hurckes, Meyer and Dusthimer. are all going out in a fierce QUICKLY FIGURE YOUR OWN SAFE DRIVING LIMITS.
