Driver of a small boat in upper right of photo tries to steer a large section of bog to shore for an at tempt in staking it down. PAGE 3-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1972 Mystery Solved Stranger On The Fox After the Plaindealer received numerous calls on the strange chunks of land passing through McHenry, via Fox river, the photographer was assigned an aerial reconnaissance mission to solve the mystery. Flying above the Fox, in a northerly direction over Pistakee Lake, Nippersink Lake and Fox Lake, the culprit was discovered - Grass Lake. Because of the high water, huge sections of the bogs of Grass Lake are breaking apart and surfacing to drift with the current. Workers in Lake county are attempting to stake them down but many break free again in the strong current. If you have not seen one passing through McHenry as yet, be patient, many are headed this way. Some will make it. This strange piece of land drifting on the Fox river passes through the city of McHenry with questionable concern. "Where are they coming from?" -r Staff Photos A highway department crew is at work on the Grass Lake road bridge freeing the bogs as they jam the underpass. Wayne Gaylord An aerial view solves the mystery. The piece of land is a bog which has journeyed from Grass Lake. n\ nM This column of questions and answers on federal tax matters is provided by the local office of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and is published as a public service to taxpayers. The column answers questions most frequently asked by taxpayers. Q) My mother-in-law re ceives Social Security benefit payments. Will this have any effect on whether I can claim her as a dependent next year? A) Yes. Although the So cial Security benefits are not taxable to her, they must be included in determining the amount of support she fur nished herself if the benefits were spent on support items, such as food, lodging, cloth ing, medical care, etc. She must meet the other depend ency tests and you must have furnished over half of her to tal support. Thus, if the So cial Security benefits were the only support furnished by your mother-in-law or anyone else, you must have spent more than that amount on her support in order to claim her as a dependent. Q) I know that I. am en titled to a deduction of up to $400 a month for the expenses of child care services per formed in my household while I am out working. But would I still get a deduction if I paid a neighbor to take care of my children in her own home? A) Yes. Expenses incurred outside the taxpayer's house hold for the care of depend-, ents who are under 15 are deductible to the extent the expenses in any one month do not exceed: $200 in case of one such individual; $300 in the case of two; and $400 in the case of three or more. Of course, the expenses are de ductible only if they enable the taxpayer to be gainfully employed. For more information on the deduction for household and dependent care expenses, see IRS Publication 553, "Highlights of 1971 Changes in the Tax Law." It's avail able free by dropping a post card to your Internal Revenue district office. Q) I'm planning to sell my house next fall. Does the IRS have any publications on the tax effects of selling my home? A) Yes. Write your Inter nal Revenue district office and _ Rte. 120 McHenry Ph. 385-6981 * Made fresh from the finest ingredients * Serving Thursday thru Sunday 5pm to 12am WE DELIVER ask for a free copy of IRS Publication 523, "Tax Infor mation on Selling Your Home." This booklet will tell you how to report the gain or loss on the sale of your residence and under what conditions you may be able to postpone the tax on any profit from the sale. Q) I take and develop pho tographs as a hobby and occa sionally earn some money from it. I know I have to re port the income but may I deduct the expenses of my photographic hobby? A) From your hobby in come, you may deduct items that are ordinarily deductible, whether incurred in a busi ness or nonbusiness activity. Examples of such expenses, are interest and taxes. Under proposed rules, if your income still exceeds these expenses, you may deduct other related expenses from the excess in come in the following order: 1) other business expenses that do not involve adjust ments to the basis of prop erty; and 2) depreciation and other such deductions that in volve adjustments to the basis of property.
