American Legion Auxiliary News UNIT 491 by Pearl Cooper The September meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit No. 491, was called to order by the newly elected President, Mrs. Raymond (Betty Lou) Smith. The charter was draped by Mrs. Smith and Cecilia Violett, Chaplain, in memory of departed member and president-elect, Lillian Miller. Foreign Relations Chairman, Mrs. William (Mary Pat) Cunningham, introduced Father Joachim Daleiden, a cousin of Mrs. Violett, whowas home from Hong Kong on a vacation. Hong Kong is the new Foreign Relations project for 1973. Father Daleiden has spent 4 years in Hong Kong and is the superintendent of a non- denomination school, which consists of a grade school, 5 years of high school and 2 years of college. He gave a very in­ teresting description of Hong Kong and brought along many interesting paintings and books, etc. A donation was given to Father Daleiden, which will be used to help further his school program. Past President Parley Chairman, Mrs. David (Doris) Henken, told of the past presidents' meeting that was held at the home of Ceil Violett. Eleven past presidents at­ tended and voted fo send a $10 donation to the cancer society in memory of Lillian Miller. Nylons were collected and cut and will be sent to the Veterans Craft Exchange Jewelry was sorted and pacxed for the women patients "at Downey hospital. The November meeting will be a dinner and all past presidents are urged to contact Mrs. Henken for reservations. The date of the dinner is Nov. 2. All past presidents who would like to attend the McHenry county past presidents' dinner, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Huntley post home are also urged to contact Mrs. Henken for reservations. Rehabilitation Chairman for Elgin hospital, Mrs. Victor (Marie) Howe, announced that she and her co-chairman, Mrs. Stanley (Dorothy) Diedrich, attended a meeting at Elgin hospital. Shoes, socks, purses and clean outer clothing are needed by the patients at the hospital. The 11th District will hold a cook-out for the Elgin veterans in Elburn on Oct. 3 and the McHenry Unit will be represented by Mrs. Howe and Mrs. Diedrich at this affair. A donation of $25 was made to the Monday morning program (Creature Comforts) at Elgin state hospital,, also $18 will be sent to Elgin hospital for the cigarette fund. Americanism Chairman, Pauline Pickett, announced that a donation of four classroom flags and one out­ door flag was made to Edgebrook school and eight more classroom flags will be given in the near future. A donation of $5 was sent to the Chapel of 4 Chaplains. Mrs. Maria Guettler and Mrs. Midge Scharf were elected as delegates to the McHenry County Council with Mrs. Lois Crouch and Mrs. Marie Howe as alternates. All members of the auxiliary are welcome to attend the county meetings, which are held on the first Friday of every month. It was announced that Mrs. Catherine Lello, Illinois Department President, will be the guest of the McHenry Council at the February meeting. This meeting will be hosted in the McHenry Post Home by the McHenry Unit. The annual 11th District Convention will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14 in St. Charles. It will feature the department caravan in the morninjg session and after a recess for lunch, will hold the installation of the, new district officers. The registration for the meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. with the meeting to start at 9 a.m. Delegates will be Mrs. Ruth Mrachek, Lauretta Homo, Midge Scharf, Pearl Cooper and Delia Freund. Alternates are Ceil Violett, Marie Howe and i-.etty Lingenfelter. Ways and Means Chairman, Ceil Violett, announced that the auxiliary will sponsor a "Chicken Dinner" on Sunday, Oct. 29, serving 12 Noon to 3 p.m. and will be open to the public. Tickets can be obtained from Mrs. Violett, or her co- chairman, Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper, or purchased at the door. Mrs. Lloyd (Margaret) Scharf was elected and in­ stalled as first vice-president of the unit, with Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper, elected and installed as second vice- president. Grace Latimer, Margaret Datz and Eva Bacon were presented with their leadership awards for having successfully completed the leadership course. Frances Matchen and Pearl Cooper were awarded "Seven Plus Two for '72 Club" awards from the Department Membership Chairman, Virginia Sonne, and Mrs. Romona Henricks, 1971-72 Department President. Mrs. Matchen was also given an award to the "Century Club" for having signed up over 100 members last year. The membership drive is in full swing and all members who have not paid their dues are urged to do so by sending their dues to the post home or to members of the membership team. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Grace Latimer, Frances Matchen, Jane Grothmann and Italia Mazzoni. Helen Bacon was not present to accept the attendance award. Marge Datz and Pauline Pickett wer6 winners of the special prizes. Thirty-five members and one guest, Dorothy Zyla, attended the meeting. Refreshments were served by the past officers with Doris Henken in charge. The October refreshment committee will be headed by Marilyn Miller and will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at the post home.
