PAGE 7-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1972 AERONAUTICS WASHINGTON -- Early' one spring morning, a gi gantic shadow drifted across the small town of Alice Springs in the'heart of the Australian wilderness. The shadow was cast by the largest balloon ever flown by man, and it was carrying 1,200 pounds of experimental equipment. Towering more than 80 stories high and large enough to hold a football stadium with room left over, the giant air bag contained 'ore than 46 million cubic feet of air. Many of the 61 balloon flights made for NASA dur ing the past year have taken advantage of the unique qualities of balloons. Most large balloons are designed the superballoon flown in Australia reached 44,000 meters (148,000 feet)--and they can stay aloft from a few hours to many months. For much astronomical re search, balloons provide an excellent platform above most of the atmosphere. Far cheaper than satellites, the balloons usually cost about $1,000 per million cubic feet, with the majority ranging from $10,000 to $20,000. More than half of the bal loons sent up by NASA begin their journeys in Palestine, Tex. Balloons which studv the southern skies are launched in Argentina. Balloons are also sent up from Ft. Churchill, Canada, on the western edge of Hud son's Bay. As a protection against the climate, Eskimos use the plastic material from fallen balloons to insulate their dwellings. i/A\W Taxpayers Ask IRS This column of questions and answers on federal tax matters is provided by the local office of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and is published as a public service to taxpayers. Can I also deduct the cost of traveling from work to school as an education expense? A) Yes. You may deduct transportation expenses for qualified educational activi ties incurred going between: 1) the general area of your principal business location and a school located beyond that general area; or 2) your place of employment and a school within the same general area. However, if you return home before going to school, you may deduct the expense in going from home to school only to the extent it does not exceed the cost of going from work to school. You may not deduct the cost of local transportation between your residence and school on a nonworking day. Q) Does a person have to live with you the whole year for you to claim him as a dependent? A) Generally, a person must be a member of your household for the entire year for you to claim him as a dependent. However, this rule does not apply when you are claiming an exemption for a relative. Q) What are the rules on the sick pay exclusion for pay received while you're out sick or injured? A) It depends on how- much you received in pay for the time you were out. If you received over 75 percent of your regular salary from a wage continuation plan while you were sick, there is a 30-day waiting period wheth er or not you were hospital ized at any time. After it expii-es, you may exclude up to $100 a week from your income as sick pay. If you received 75 percent or less of your regular pay, there is a 7-day waiting period. Then you may exclude up to $75 a week. After 30 days, you may exclude up to $100 a week as sick pay. If you were hospitalized, there is no 7-day waiting period. Forms are avail able at anv IRS office. THE CONGRESSMAN SPEAKS - "Congress should help reduce military manpower, and I heartily support the voluntary draft," Congressman Robert McClory told students at a McHenry County college political science class during a question-and-answer period last week. Reduction of the military will necjes|sitate bringing some men from overseas bases, he said, and also lead toward reduced military spending. Dreams may be the incentive, but realities demand something more substantial, like stone or concrete. We all have dreams and hopes for the life we would like to build, and dreams are needed. If we would live successfully, however, let us not forsake reality. There must be effort, there must be achievement. We cannot build successfully, dream upon dream.
