Want to make inexpensive and original greeting cards for the next holiday? Try a trick with tie-dyed fabric and cut out paper. Begin with a washable fabric--an old sheet, burlap or muslin, for instance. You can easily tie-dye the fabric with various colors of powder or liquid Rit dye. Wash fabric and place damp fabric on flat surface with protective paper around wdtk area. Gather or crumple fabric and tie securely in many places with tightly wrapped rubber bands. Mix 1/4 cup liquid or 1/2 package powder dye in a quart of hot water. Heat dye solution to simmering tem perature and dye tied fabric, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes. Remove bands and rinse fabric thoroughly in cool, running water. Allow fabric to dry; iron. Get envelopes and plain cards at your local stationery store or cut paper into appro priate sized greeting cards. For example, cut a card 9 1/4 inches long by 6 1/4 inches wide; fold in half lengthwise. On the front half of the greet ing card trace and cut out an appropriate holiday shape--a heart, a Christmas tree, a four-leaf clover, for instance. Then cut out a piece of the tie-dyed fabric measuring about 4x6 inches. Paste this on the back half of the folded card so that the fabric shows through the cut-out shape. Print on an appropriate mes sage . . . and there you have it. Make as many cards as you like. Happy greetings! New Photo Club Active At Marian High "Uncle Sam's Contest" In tempo with the current presidential election cam paigns, a group of Edgebrook's fourth graders presented for their parents and classmates, during American Education Week, the patriotic play, "Uncle Sam's Contest". The lead roles, Goddess of Liberty and Uncle Sam, were played by Dawn Ortman and Michael Lawler. The play was produced during a four week creative drama seminar conducted by Mrs. Kohrt. In picture at top are seated, left to right, Jeff Cadotte, Ken George, Wendy Aissen, Keith Schaefer and Jack Marinich; standing, left to right, Mary Forner, Dawn Ortman, Edith Maxwell, Barbara Pintozzi, Joe Bauml, Peter Ritthaler, Michael Lawler, Terry Land is, Xony Weyland and Janice Miller. In the bottom photo are the Goddess of Liberty and Uncle Sam. PAGE 15-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 3, 1972 With the completion of a photo lab at Marian Central Catholic high school, through efforts of the Fathers' Club and a small group of students, the first Marian Central Photo club was finally formed. The pur pose of the club is to use photography not only as a self- satisfying hobby, but also to record school events for publication in school papers, yearbooks and local newspapers. This year Victor Meuch, club sponsor and art instructor, feels that photography can be expanded into the art program as an exceptional media for allowing students to express themselves, just as they would in the graphic arts. Only in recent years has photography come to its own as a realized art form used by educators, and many high schools, colleges and even grade schools. The "latent- image" is no longer only an event recording media, and as hundreds of books written on the subject illustrate, the various creative techniques possible both in the camera and in the lab, are unlimited. The Art III class will attempt to work both in still and motion picture photography, but even though several cameras are available, the class is still in need of adjustable cameras which can be rented or loaned on a temporary basis. Creative and trick processing will be done by the students themselves and the final product will be evaluated and graded on its own creative merits. Pictured abovet left to fight, are Marty Palmer and Mary Walcxynski, both from Johnsburg, and Woodstock Juniors Kathy Koch and Eileen Burg, Art III students of Marian Central, as they observe the production of a photograph. SPECIAL SESSION ON TAXES Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie has called a special session of the legislature for Nov. 26 to freeze real estate taxes immediately and to work for property tax reductions in 1973. The special session will be concurrent with the General Assembly's regular session. The governor's proposal is based on the prospect of the state goven- ment's early receipt of an annual $100 million from federal revenue sharing and an additional $45 million bonus this year. Cities and counties in Illinois will receive $200 million annually in direct revenue sharing funds, plus a one-time bonus this year of $90 million. If the proposed program is successful, the photos will be part of the general public art exhibit scheduled for this spring. LOSE UGLY FAT Start losing weight today or money back.
