SUSAN BLENNER Twelve coeds have been appointed as the first par ticipants in a federally funded coordinated dietary intern program being established at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. They were selected from a group of about thirty food and nutrition rfiajors from theUW-SP school of home economics after receipt of a grant totalling one-third million dollars from the National Institute Health. The money will finance ac tivities for five years. The interns include Susan Blenner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wjlliam Blenner, 2312 Orchard Beach. An important feature of the program is that participation inr' ' it makes students eligible to win certification from the American Dietetic association after four years of college. Under former circumstances it was almost impossible to receive the certification (which is required by many em ployers) until one year of in- service training and work experience had been completed in a hospital 6r similar kind of institution. That period usually came the year after graduation from the university. 4 The new programjs a first of its kind in Wis<pnsta and is starting with ^cooperation between the university alfedSt. Michael's hospital in Sterans Point. That arrangement will ensure integrated didactic and clinical experiences to students in the professional setting of the hospital in the manner prescribed and approved by the American Dietetic association. PERSONALS Launched inter th' New Yeatl wl' high hopes o' a better twelve months ahead, we set our sails an' pray the winds o' fate. 11 take us safely inter port. In all me years o' fivin\ me faith ne'er waivers, that good 11 outweigh th' bad an' love 11 win the battles o' life. Back in me own little cot, aft the wOnde'ful holiday wi' members o' me family, whom I don't see so oft, seems a bit lonely an' me shoulders don't seem so big, these days, t' handle me problems. Somehow, the good Lord gi'es the courage t' yank hard on the bootstraps, an' the world begins t' shape up in suitable routine t' make life more ac ceptable. But the feelin', that it'd be mighty good t' have family underfoot, creeps in t' the most capable practical attitude. Funny how time turns the trick, an' it only takes tolerance an' tuggin' at^Jthe bootstraps, an' afore ye know it ke've made it again, an' find herself back in the familiar little ruts comfortable patterns o' livfin'.! Disappointments in affairs o' the world ha' dampened the spirit o' the world, but seems t' this ol' lady that concentrated prayer, thoughtful mental pow'r, directed f correctin' the mistakes o' mankind, jist may affect the thinkin' V the ones holdin' up the final decisions fer a peaceful world. There's sich a strong force fr'm mental energy, ye'd be amazed at what it c'n accomplish. Seems (hat lots o' folk sort o" sit back waitin' fer results, an' it ain't easy t' put thought t\ world affairs, when a body has so many personal problems. But, the state o' the world af fects ever'one o' us, whether we're personally involved 'r not, an' it's the duty o' us all, t' keep usin' ev'ry means available, e'en though it may only be a prayer, t' hel[ straighten th' difficulty, an' git the world started on the right track t' peaceful livin', sharin' the world's bounties, an' showin' a little love fer humanity. Wi' a new slate, «n which t' record this brand new year, seems that there's a great opportunity fer us all t' an ticipate the best year ever. Folks 're a gittin' tired o' fightin'. E'en the younguns seems more peaceful, an' it jist might be the steppin' stone t' the best era in a long, long time. Thou shalt not kill, so it is written in the book. You must respect your fellow man... his right to learn and to speak free. . . . these words now burn in his mind as he steps forward, to look... All those dead soldiers there on the field were men with hope and dreams. With hope, someday they might live free... with dreams, a better life... this was their only shield... Now, the batUe is ovfer, the cannons and guns are still, no winner is standing up, from that field, holding the flag and waving it high... Just one lonely soldier is standing here, on that hill. He lifts up his head and looks toward the sky crying out words of pain in his heart. "Why do we have to fight and kill, our brother", then he sinks on his knees and tears fill his eyes. One last shot fired from the side, by the tree... he rolls back, a-sttange look on his face a sharp pain, a cry, like a wounded creature... he dies...
