In this way you will save some nutritious milk solids and minerals. Q. How can I do a good polishing job on chrome? A. By using some dry baking soda and a soft cloth. To remove any rust spots, rub some dampened aluminum foil on the chrome and wipe off with a dry cloth. Q. How can I remove some candle grease that has dropped onto a good carpet? A. Scrape as much of the wax off as possible with a spoon. Then press the spot through a blotter with a warm iron to absorb the remaining grease. From The Farm If your income in 1972 in creased substantially over previous years, you should investigate the possibility of averaging income, advises C.A. Bock, Extension specialist in agricultural law at the University of Illinois. Income averaging is not automatic but must be elected by filing schedule G income, tax -form. You can use income averaging if your income for 1972 is at least $3,000 more than 120 percent of your average taxable income* for the years 1968 through 1971. Your averageable income for 1972 can include net capital gains and the income from sale of items received by gift or bequest. These items were not allowed prior to 1970. A large sale of livestock, a farm, or in some cases, machinery, often causes a farmer's income to be sub stantially increased. Here's an example of how income averaging works: A farmer filing a 1972 joint return with his wife has a large increase in taxable income over previous years because of a $40,000 sale of farmland. Taking the 50 percent deduction for long term-capital gain on the farm land and adding to this amount his $10,000 or ordinary income brought his taxable income to $30,000. His taxable income in the four previous years was: 1968, $6,000; 1969, $8,000; 1970, $12,000 and 1971, $10,000. Without averaging, his tax in 1972 would be $7,880. By averaging, the tax is reduced to $6,616 - a saving of $1,264. Bock suggests that if you think you qualify but need some assistance, see your income tax practitioner or contact the local Internal Revenue office. SOYBEANS FOR CATTLE Damaged soybeans can be used as a protein supplement for beef cattle. Cooking is not necessary as it is for hogs, but cooking or extruding of soybeans may make the beans more palatable. Most research shows about the same feedlot performance with soybeans as with soybean meal. But several reports in dicate that young cattle fed soybeans for long periods eventually tire of eating them. Soybeans contain about 38 percent protein and 18 percent fat. About 50 pounds of soybean oil meal and 23 pounds of corn equals the protein and energy value of a bushel of soybeans. You can estimate the value of a bushel of soybeans as cattle feed by using prices you'd receive for these amounts of corn and soybean meal. Keep repeating until all residue has been removed, shifting the blotter from time to time to keep a clean surface over the spot. Q. Hpw can I prevent thin silk from puckering while running it through my sewing machine? A. By placing some white paper under the material and sewing through the whole business. The paper is easily removed after the job is done. Q. How can I clean a greasy concrete floor? A. Scatter some trisodium phosphate thickly over the floor, then sprinkle on just enough water to dissolve the chemical. Let remain an hour or so, then scrub the floor with water. If some stains still remain, keep repeating unlil success is yours. Q. How can I make my own copper polish? A. Blend flour, salt, and vinegar into a paste and rub this on your copper after it has been washed. Then rinse, and dry with a soft towel. Q. What can I do when two drinking glasses have become tightly stuck, one inside the other? A. Don't try to force them apart. Instead, fill the inside glass with cold water (for contraction) and dip the outside glass into hot water (for ex pansion). The two glasses will usually come apart, with no strain or breakage. Q. What can I do about some u%ly white patches left on my asphalt tile by spilled alcohol? A. You can usually obliterate these by rubbing with a little baby oil or olivg oil. Q. How can I, when washing sweaters, keep them soft? A. By adding one or two tablespoons of glycerin to lukewarm water when rinsing) these items. Q. How can I clean stainless steel cooking utensils? A. With steel wool dipped in lemon juice. --^-- A teacup placed in the open would require some 60 years to fill with rainwater (forgetting evaporation) in most parts of Egypt. SB WW PHI I .and get more from the GOOD YEARS t Sk, * m Tl: Fra«ck Nigaat <• - • ± R One of our neighbors down the block just recently retired and he was mad about it. You see, he didn't want to retire because his job was his main interest in life, but his company has a rule that applies to everyone - forced re tirement at a certain age. He was very depressed and told us that he didn't think of retirement as a "fun" time in his life. We went down and talked to him about it and we think we gave him some positive attitudes. We told him forced retirement, for reason of age, sickness, or whatever, is not the end of the world, nor the end of living. If sickness, disability or an age limit imposed by a company impairs one's ability to perform a certain job, he finds something that he can do - if his spirit is still strong. Wc all have to adjust to the difficulties as well as the joys and good times of living. Very few actually give up. Retirement is much the same. It really doesn't matter whether we are forced to retire, or if we choose retirement on our own, there is an adjust ment that has to be made. His thinkihg now has changed. Our neighbor has decided that the way for him to succeed in retire ment is for him to greet each morning with the idea that yester- \ day is history, today and tomor row offer him the time to do something worthwhile. Already he's doing part-time, free lance work in the field he loves best. Said one clock to another: "We must all tick together" Travel 1) lengthens the conversations, 2) broadens the mind, and 3) reduces the bank account.
