Go ahead, mark me down for a doting dad. I'm quick to admit that my little girl is precious to me. With her loving arms about my neck I feel richer than a king. I walk into a room and see her eyes light up -- so who wants to be president? As she snuggles down among the blankets, I kiss her and tell myself that I'll give her the best, now and always. That's why I take her to church every Sunday. I want God to be a part of Carta's life from the very first. I know that an understanding of God and His love will ensure my daughter's well-being far beyond any material gift I could give her. God's goodness is yours for the taking. Enrich your life. Is every taxpayer who is eligible to use the short form 1040A required to do so? A. No. Use of the short form is optional. If you had sizeable expenses for such items as medical and dental care, interest, taxes, contribu tions, alimony, child care, etc., it may be to your advantage to itemize deductions. This can only be done on "Schedule A of your Form 1040 and not. on the short form. A formula for determining whether or not you should itemize deductions is found in your tax form instructions. Q. I should receive a refund when I file my Federal income tax return. Can I still desig nate $1 of my tax towards the Presidential Election Cam paign Fund? A. Yes. Every individual (other than a nonresident alien) may participate in the Presidential Election Cam paign Fund if he has a tax liability of $1 or more ($2 or more for joint return filers). In addition, completion of Form 4875 in your tax forms package to designate the check-off will not change any of the figures on your Form 1040 or 1040A. Q. Have the filing require ments for older taxpayers been changed? A. Yes. If you are un married and 65 or older, you do not have to file a return unless you have a gross in come of $2,800 or more. For married persons filing a joint return, the filing requirement is $3,550 if either husband or wife is 65 or older, and $4,300 if both are 65 or older. However, if you are self- employed, you must file a return if you had net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more, regardless of your age. Q. I'm retired and eligible to receive the retirement in come credit. Will the IRS compute it for me? A. Yes. If you elect to have the IRS compute your tax and you have a retirement income credit, the IRS will also com pute this for you. Just follow the directions in your tax form instructions. Q. How do I go about order ing free IRS tax publications? A. Just fill in the order blank on the back of your tax forms package, choosing the form or free publication that you want from the list shown, and send it to the IRS office shown on the package. Q. Are there any limits on how much you can deduct as a charitable contribution? A. Yes, In general, contri butions to most charities, such as churches, educational or ganizations, hospitals, etc., may be deducted up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. However, contribu tions to certain private non- operating foundations, vet erans organizations, fraternal societies, and cemetery organi zations are limited to 20 per cent of adjusted gross income. The organization itself can tell you which of the two categories it falls into. There are also certain limitations on contributions of property, such as stock. For details, see IRS Publica tion 526, "Income Tax De duction for Contributions," available free from your IRS district office. Q) Is it true that the stand ard deduction has been in creased for the 1972 tax year? A) The percentage stand ard deduction has been in creased. Instead of multiply ing your adjusted gross income by 13 percent, now you multi ply by 15 percent. The top limit was $1,500. Now it is $2,000. Q) How can I tell whether I should itemize my deduc tion or choose the standard deduction? A) It usually will be to your advantage to itemize de ductions if: you are a home owner paying interest and taxes; you had unusually large medical and dental expenses during the year; you paid ali mony, suffered a major unin sured casualty loss, or made large contributions to quali fied charities. This year many rk The Bible Speaks Virgfe L. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry DIAL-A-DEVOTION PHONE 8 Hear God's Word Wherever You Are. Your tax form instructions contain a formula you may use to determine which method you should select. Q) When can I expect to get my W-2 form? A) Employers are required to issue W-2 statements to their employees by January 31. Many, however, issue them sooner for the convenience of those employees who are ex pecting a refund and want to file early. Q) Are there any limits on how much my husband and I may claim for babysitting and maid service expenses incurred while I am out working? A) You are allowed a de duction of up to $400 per month for expenses for depend ent care and household serv ices provided in your home: 1) if your dependent is under 15 and you are entitled to claim an exemption for him; 2) if your dependent is phys ically or mentally incapable of caring for himself, regardless of age. Of course, these ex penses must be incurred to en able you to be gainfully em ployed and you must furnish over half the cost of main taining the household that in cludes the dependent. For more details, including the income limitations on the deduction, see IRS Publication 503, "Child Care and Disabled Dependent Care." It's avail able free by writing your In ternal Revenue district office. Q) Where can I get a copy of your income tax guide? A) A copy of "Your Federal Income Tax," Publication 17 may be purchased for 75 cents from your IRS district office, many post offices throughout the country and the Govern ment Printing Office ir* Wash ington, D.C. If you operate your own business, you may also be interested in Publica tion 334, "Tax Guide for Small Business," which you may also purchase for 75 cents. Q) Each year I hear of cases where refunds are delayed be cause taxpayers make errors on their returns. What are some checks I can make to avoid an error and get my re fund faster? A) To insure the prompt processing of your return, you should check the following be fore sending your return: (1) Recheck all your mathe matical computations; (2) Be sure you used the correct tax table or tax rate schedule; (3) Be sure vou used the peel- off label that came on the cover of your tax package (If you don't have the label, print name, address, and Social Se curity number in the spaces at the top of the front of Form 1040 or Form 1040A); (4) Be sure that your return is signe4 and dated; joint re turns must have the signa tures of husband and wife; (5) Be certain all W-2's and supporting documents are attached. Q) Can I designate more than $1 of my tax liability toward the Presidential Elec tion Campaign Fund? A) If you are married, fil ing a joint return, you may designate $2 of your joint tax liability. But you may not des ignate extra money for this purpose. SUNDAY S A SERMON A Winter of Discontent? Is this a winter of discontent for you? If it is, it seems like even the weather is against you. A great deal of people also feel this way and it is almost a universal feeling. In most pacts of the country landscape is cold and bare. The birds aren't singing and even traveling is hazardous. Christmas, the time of joy, is gone again and plain old winter is here. Winter is a very natural time for people to let their problems and worries bother them and get them down. „*>If we would only depend more on our faith, winter could be a time of great joy, because we know that spring will follow, life will continue, and better times are ahead. Winter, by its sheer con trast with spring, reminds us of the wonders of God. He will not let us down and we know this. But an active faith helps us to live to our fullest potential, no matter what or how dark and gloomy the circumstances. THIS WORLDj OF OURS IWhile environment noise pollu tion alone probably does not pro duce mental illne$t, the continual bombardment of I noise on an al ready depressed person cannot be helpful. A 1969/study in England illustrates this doint. Comparative studies of persfns living adjacent to London's fleathrotv Airport with others living hi a quieter en* vironment revealed that among those living in the noisy environ ment there was a significantly higher rate of admission to men tal hospitals. SECRET DISCIPLES Becoming a follower of Jesus always carries with it a certain stigma which people very often fear. This fear causes hesitation among would-be disciples and it is not uncommon for a person to profess to himself that he is a secret disciple. This is no new brotherhood, for in Jesus' day the Bible refers to at least two persons who sought to live this fruitless life. These men were both, in all probability, members of the highest political organization of the land. The Sanhedrin was a Supreme Court- Senate-Religious Hierarchy composed of seventy of the most respected and popular men of Israel. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus had had early contacts with Jesus Christ and had given mental and emotional assent to His teaching. However, the Sanhedrin as a whole had rejected Jesus' teaching as well as his person. Therefore, to openly profess identification with Jesus would have meant political disaster for these men. They simply chose to remain quiet. "Nevertheless, among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue" (John 12:42). "Howbeit no man spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews" (John 7:13). The Christian life is an open life. To seek to be a silent Christian is to deny the very nature of Christianity. Alexander McClaren believed that the only silent disciple must be a dead one. Again and again the Bible makes emphasis of communicating by mouth and action that faith which we possess in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will I confess before my Father which is in heaven, and whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 10:32,33). (Also found in Luke 12:8). The apostle Paul states that salvation comes initially as one would openly confess belief in Jesus Christ. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9). Paul also emphasized that all persons, even those who chose to deny Jesus Christ in this life, will confess him at that Great White Throne Judgement on their way to eternal separation from God. "And every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians2:ll). The true nature of the belief of Nicodemus and Joseph was revealed at Jesus' Crucifixion. They could no longer remain silent as they witnessed the terrible death of their Lord. Joseph openly went to the Roman ruler and asked for the body of Jesus that he might provide for him a proper burial.Forgetting the strong rebukes of their associates, Joseph and Nicodemus identified with Jesus in his death as they buried the body of our Saviour. This must have been a great relief to both men as they began to live what they believed. Their reward was, in a few days, to see the resurrected LordL \N Wo w ' ci / ° c\0 c\ Jbonal 'p You oou/ol buya. bt he \A//-Hn a- And ;oa °oU Jouy <x c,nr w/V-A a bond- Yqla Cow/i buy a W/'«, cc bond.
