By Mike Rothenberger Staff Representative Dale Carnegie & Assoc., Inc., New York. Copyright 1965, Dale Carnegie & Assoc., Inc. From The Farm A very prominent business man went downtown to his of- fice one morning, a couple of hours earlier than usual. He had some things he wanted to do before the employees came to work. No one was there when he arrived except old Tom, the custodian of the build ing. Old Tom was a faithful employee of many years serv ice to the company. When the b o s s w a l k e d i n t o h i s o f f i c e , there was old Tom emptying the ash trays, dusting the furni ture and tidying up the place. When the boss noticed him going about his routine, he said, "Tun, you know, as I look around this place, I can't help thinking what an asset you have been to our organization for all these years. You have kept this place clean and cheer ful for our employees and our customers to enjoy." "Tom," he said, "You are an important member of this organization and I want you to know that I appreciate you and all you h a v e d o n e . " O l d T o m s a i d , "Thank you, boss," and walked out of the room with his dust cloth in his hand. A few minutes passed and the boss had settled down to work at his desk -- and then the door to his office opened and in came Tom. His eyes were moist -- there was a tear on his cheek. The boss could not understand. He said, "What is wrong, Tom, did I say some thing to offend you?" Tom said, "No boss, you didn't offend me, but I have something I want to t e l l y o u . " " B o s s , " h e s a i d , "You know that I have worked right here in this place for seventeen years -- twelve of those years I have worked for you -- and this morning is the first time anyone ever told me that they appreciated anything I do." He said, "Boss, I Just want you to know that I ap preciate what you said to me this morning more than I have ever appreciated my paycheck that you signed for me. I just wanted to tell you." He thai turned and walked out of the room. It was Professor William James of Harvard who said, "The deepest principle in Hu man Nature is the craving to be appreciated." He didn't say -- the want or the desire -- he said the craving. Man will not g i v e u s h i s b e s t f o r m o n e y alone, but he will give us every thing possible if we will give him a bit of sincere apprecia tion. t h i s simple principle, when we re solve not to criticize or con demn, but instead, look for every opportunity to drop a word of honest appreciation here and there, we will find that life will take on a new glow. We will find that more and more fine people will be attracted to us. This is a uni versal principle. We can use it at home, at the club, at the of fice, or any place else where we associate with other people. When we have made it a habit to give honest praise and ap preciation, we shall have taken another giant step forward to ward the self-preparation that will enhance our success and happiness. The development of a keen awareness of the thoughts, the feeling, and the reactions of other people is an other way that I can "Prepare Myself," and assure that some day my time for a. ropfe re warding life will come. CONFINEMENT SYSTEM If a new or expanded hog confinement system is in your 1973 plans, don't just build a building of a certain size and fill it with hogs. University of Illinois Agricultural Engineer A. J. Muehling warns that such a building plan can strain your farm's input supplying capacity. He recommends considering other vital inputs such as feed, labor, equipment and capital to determine how many hogs you can produce. Then base your farrowing schedule on this number of hogs. Only after you have established the size of en terprise and farrowing schedule can you determine the number and types of buildings required, Muehling says. When existing buildings are available, decide which, if any, can be used and for what they are best suited. He points out that many existing buildings can be remodeled into serviceable structures. Others should be abandoned. It doesn't pay to spend money remodeling buildings that still will not be satisfactory. If the answer io your new or expansion building program calls for confinement buildings, pay careful attention to space- per-head requirements. Muehling recommends that 25- to 40-pound pigs on slatted or partially-slatted floors be allotted three square feet of floor space per pig; 41- to 100- pound pigs four square feet; 101- tol50-pound pigs six square feet; and 151- to 210-pound pigs eight square feet. Allow nine square feet for each 151- to 210- pound pig during hot weather. Hogs fed on solid concrete floors require from four square feet per head for the smallest group to 111/2 square feet per head for larger hogs. Sows kept in confinement require 15 to 20 square feet per head' on slatted or partially-slatted floors and 20 to 25 square feet on solid concrete floors. MANAGING REPLACEMENT HEIFERS Heifer calves earmarked for the breeding herd should be fed to gain at least 1 to 1.5 pounds per day after weaning. Yearling heifers should weigh a minimum of 650 pounds, 750 for the larger breeds, if they are bred at 15 months of age. Bred heifers should gain about one pound per day on pasture and 0.75 to l pound per day through the wintering period if they are to develop normally and to deliver a healthy calf. (Also provide adequate protein and energy to bred heifers through the wintering period, especially after calving, if you want them to come back into heat and be rebred soon. BATTERY CHARGING A battery taking charge gives off highly explosive hydrogen gas. You should charge bat teries in an area that has free air movement to prevent a hydrogen gas build-up that might explode. Do not make any connections either to or from the battery while the charge is on. When using jumper cables to start an engine, connect to the fully charged battery last and make the final connection to the grounded terminal. Always connect positive to positive and negative to negative when using jumper cables. Otherwise the diodes in the alternator can become damaged. Never use matches around a battery and be careful when making a connection to prevent sparks discharge.
