In this meet Kevin "Crow" Weiss broke his own school record in the 400 yd freestyle. His time was 4:26:8. Other McHenry winners were as follows: The 200 yd Medley Relay team of Topp, Sek, Koerber and White in the time of 1:56:1. Weiss also won the 200 yd freestyle in 2:03:5. The 50 and 100 yd freestyles was won by Randy Watkins in the times of 24:9 and 55:4. Kiveley again won the diving. Scott Topp won the 100 yd backstroke in the time of 58:8. Jon Sek won the 100 yd breaststroke in 1:12:1 and the 400 yd freestyle relay team of White, Gall, Fetzer and Watkins won in four minutes flat. On Thursday the local squad journeyed to Elgin and home on the short end of a 42 score. The meet was in the last event and the lost out by four tenths of a second. How close can you get? Two school records again were broken. "Crow" Weiss broke the 200 yd freestyle in the time of 1:59:4. and the 400 yd freestyle relay team of Watkins, Fetzer, Topp, and Weiss swam the distance in 3:43:3. Weiss also won the 400 yd freestyle in the time of 4:43:9. Jon Sek won the 100 yd breaststroke in 1:11:9 and the 50 yd Individual Medley in 27:3. Next home meet is Tuesday against Hersey high school. By Dick Rabbitt The fast stepping "Fighting Warriors" defeated the highly touted Barrington Broncos Friday night at Buckner Gym by a score of 74 to 65. It was a sweet victory for the Warriors and put them right into the thicket of the Conference race. The Warriors started like they were shot from a gun. Before you could blink an eye Tommy Knaack had the Warriors on the scoreborad, and Ben Himpelmann followed with another basket seconds later. This set the tempo for the first quarter as the Warriors hit for 12 out of 17 to grab a 24 to 12 lead. Barrington changed defenses four times during th«? quarter to try and slow down the Warrior rampage. After Himpelmann's quick basket in the second quarter, Mark Heyse, Barrington's great guard, hit for 5 straight baskets to bring the score 26 to 24 Warriors with six minutes remaining. That, however, was as close as the Broncos got, as the locals began to pull away to a 40 to 30 halftime lead. The third quarter started off slow, with neither team scoring for the first two minutes and 12 seconds. However, at the 4:20 mark Ludwig's three point play put McHenry ahead 47 to 34, but Barrington roared back and only trailed 55 to 48 at the quarter. With 5:01 remaining Dan Kelley, the 6'6" Bronc center, fouled out and this seemed to take the starch out of the Broncos. With Kelley out of the game, Mark Bentz really took control of the boards and from that time on it was a Cakewalk for the Warriors. Tommy Knaack with 8 out of 11 for 16pts led the local attack. Roger Wanta came off the bench and gaining the con fidence he lacked early in the year hit for 5 buckets and 4 free throws for 14 pts. Himpelmann also had 14. What can be said of this great Warrior victory? It was the first time that Barrington was beaten in Buckner gym. The team was "sky high" for the game. I believe the tempo for the game was set at a pep session Friday morning. Coach Ludwig in addressing the student body made mention of "student support". Support he got from the rooting section under the South basket. The roar was deafening, and I am afraid a beam or two might be cracked as a result of the sound waves. Yes indeed, it was a great victory not only for the squad, but for all Warrior fans both young and old. The locker room after the game was a complete madhouse, with yelling, backslapping and handshakes all around the room. Coach Ludwig was so emotionally drained that it took him a few minutes to get his composure. All he could say is "How sweet it is". Yes, Coach I - agree. "How sweet it is to beat Barrington". DEFEAT CARDUNALS On Saturday night the Warriors traveled to Dundee and came home with a 55 to 47 victory over the Cards. Both teams showed the effects of tough Friday night games. The Cards won in the last seconds over Crystal Lake 53 to 52, and of course the Warrior victory over Barrington. Dundee led at the quarter 14 to 13, in a very loosely played quarter. Both teams were guilty of turnovers and missed shots. In the second quarter play improved slightly, with the lead exchanging hands until Bentz' basket at the TOM KNAACK has the basket in sight and his marksmanship was on the plus side as he hit on 8 of 11 to lead the Warriors to a 74-65 victory over the Barrington Broncos. Knaack's 16 points were top for the Warriors with Himpelmann and Wanta each totaling 14 points. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) buzzer put the Warriors ahead 27 to 25. In the third quarter with Bentz, Himpelmann and Wanta all scoring, the Warriors raced out to a 39 to 31 lead, but Dundee roared back to close the gap 41 to 37 going into the final quarter. During the final 8 minutes Wanta, Bentz and Ludwig took charge for the Warriors and led them to a 55 to 47 win. Mention must be made of performances of some of the Warriors. Bobby Habich played a splended game on defense. Given the chore of guarding Unruh, Dundee's high scorer, Bob did more than meet the task. Unruh's 4th and last basket came with 6:47 remaining in the second quarter. So frustrated at the close guarding by Habich, this fine shooter shot only 4 times the second half, and couldn't get off a shot the last quarter. It was indeed a fine performance by the young Warrior forward. Roger Wanta came off the bench for the second night in a row and sparked the Warrior attack. His 8 baskets and 2 free throws for 18 pts led all scorers for the evening. The "Big Fellow", Mark Bentz, pulled down 18 rebounds for a remarkable job. The Warrior's double victory along with Woodstock defeating Zion on Saturday night t puts the Warriors tied for second place only one game out of the lead. Next weekend is another doubleheader. Friday the Libertyville "Wildcats" come to town, and on Saturday night the Warriors travel to Marian Central. This game could be a repeat of the triple overtime game at the Elgin Regional several years ago. EARL WALSH We were so glad that we lifted our hulk out of the easy chair Friday night and toured over to Buckner Gym to watch the Warriors upset the Broncos of Barrington. After all, Barrington is the No. 1 team in the North Suburban basketball con ference. That is, they are on top in the standings, but try to tell McHenry fans that the Warriors are not No. l! The Warriors came out of the gate fast and stunned the Broncos. Our boys were up against size, but once again proved that it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog that counts. So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ on the victory, shots right in games. He called the both weekend BOXSCORES McHENRY Habich Knaack Bentz Ludwig Himpelmann-.. Mark Bentz had a busy night under the boards against the big boys, proving again that he is the biggest 6'2" center in the conference. Roger Ludwig couldn't drive in for close shots against that Barrington zone, but played a whale of a game. The big difference in the team came when fellows like Tommy Knaack hit from the outside. Habich was strong in close, but ran into foul trouble. Oh- and that Roger Wanta! he came off the bench to play basketball. Himpelmann was a ball of fire both on offense and defense. As we have seen before, Camasta's stamina, speed and ball handling were a great help in the victory. Tonyan's size was used when needed in spots. They were all great. And, our hat is off to Coach Ken Ludwig. He has brought this team along in masterful fashion. He has the boys believing in themselves. And, how about that crowd? It looked good to see such a large number present. En thusiasm in the student section spread all the way around the gym. We didn't travel to Dundee Saturday night, but 01' Crystal Ball Rabbitt was there to report We call your attention to reports on the sports page. Coach "Hutch" has his fresh men wrestlers going strong. Mike Shanahan is bringing our swimmers and divers into the limelight. Other schools had a start on us in this sport, but Mike is making McHenry's splash heard 'round the loop. Joined the McHenry Hospital annual meeting and dinner (luscious dinner) at McHenry Country Club Saturday night and had a real good time. We were with Past Pres. George P. Freund and Mary. George was at the helm for many years in bringing the hospital through rough waters and hasn't lost a bit of en thusiasm for the continued growth and expansion of ser vices. They had a speaker who was great, humorous as they come in spots and rich in knowledge when he chose to be serious. Yep. Harry Ecklund and Elda were among those present whom we were pleased to meet and greet. Seems like everybody in this part of the country knew "Red" Hobbs. Quite a fellow. He asked no quarter and gave no quarter. "Red" and his winning smile will be missed. Just nine years ago Monday, two little love birds ("Don't mention our name") were married here. How well they remember that day. The weather was mild ~ 65 degrees. That's what they claim.
