PAGE 14-PLAIN3 EALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1973 Pastor Joins Crowds At Disney Attraction (The Rev. William O. Han- ner, retired Episcopal pastor, is spending the winter traveling through the South. This is the ninth in his series). DISNEY WORLD Miami, like Chicago has its carona of communities. On the north lies a new one, Miami Lakes. Here lives Craig (Crego) and Margaret Atkinson. He had lived next door to me at Northwestern, I had gone to Europe with him for three months in 1928, had later been their best man. He is now treasurer of a bus line in Florid^ We were staying with the Atkinsons and from him I bought two tours to Disney World, by bus, to avoid driving You leave Miami early and are in Disney World by 1 p.m. From the bus parking lot we took the famous monorail to the Magic City. Disney World lay before us. The Florida jack pine had become fairyland. The Fairy Castle and adventure beckoned. The pouring rain had turned to a misty breeze so the crowd was small, thank goodness! Our first stop was the Crystal Palace cafeteria. All eateries are run by the corporation. With our tray we moved into a glassed-in world of growing things. Lunch was in an indoor garden. You can choose and pick "attractions". The tour in cluded two books of tickets. We took the Jungle Tour, Mr. Toads Ride, the Haunted House, the Swiss Family Robinson's Tree House and the Hall of Presidents, which I liked the best of all. All these entertainments feature Walt Disney's animated animals and human mannequins. They are interesting but have a sameness and they are fun but noisy. The night was spent in one of the great motels nearby. We had a beautiful room with elegant beds. It, too, was part of the tour so I did not worry about the posted room price which was more than I could have afforded. All the large motel chains have "outlets" here. They are built and building. The area about Disney World is overbuilt, overpriced and underoccupied. Next morning was clear, bright and cool. It was a good day. There are two parades a day - around noon and late afternoon, there are roaming bands and everyone enjoys the Three Little Pigs, Pooh Bear, Eyore, Snow White and Cin derella. They, too, roam about. You can have your picture taken with them. Everyone gets in on this act. The children from 4 to 104 squeal and dance and laugh and take pictures. Rose took my picture with the Walrus from Alice in Won derland. These characters circulate amongst the children. One wee boy insisted on kissing Pooh Bear's nose which wrinkled delightfully. I was told by our guide that these actors' uniforms, which are heavy to wear, were "air conditioned" inside. I'd like to know how this was done. It was. necessary. Eyes shone and \ cheeks smiled while cameras - clicked. Pictures of the crowd watching and . of the photographers photographing were in order. Most folks love sky rides. This sky ride takes you over the streets and shows. It even turns a corner. One small boy cried, "it's more fun than anything" Lunch was at King Stefen's Banquet Hall in the Fairy Castle. You pay at the door and are whisked up to the Great Hall of the Medieval Castle for dinner or lunch much as you are at the castle deals on a European trip. The pages and wenches were in medieval costume. Here I might say that Disney World is immaculately clean- everywhere. It is manned by a LARGE corps of fine looking, highly trained, pretty, hand some, polite, attractive, shaven and well shorn, well coiffeured young men and women. They are a credit to the organization. You enjoy them. There is too, a whole "second" Disney World un derground. It is not shown, you never see it. It is where all the services are carried on. Here is the machinery that makes things run, here are pumps and engines, here are waste disposal facilities and the thousand . and one things that are vital to extravaganza overhead. These things are not seen - if they could be they would be a major attraction. r • • . ; . . ,«v: " After lunch we foajted^rir her husband, "is that a America the beautiful, where German Band?" the scenic glories of our land By five we were back on our are shown on 360 degree circle ^ bus, a brand new one ready for vision. This show is by courtesy of Monsanto. It is magnificent. To close the day we visited the Contemporary Resort. Here the monorail with its four and five car trains rims right through the lobby of tne hotel. Strolling Mexican Minstrels entertained us i|i native costume. I heard one dear little lady the long ride back to Miami 'where the Atkinsons met us and we were in bed by midnight. It was fun, it was exciting, it is the heaven of amusement parks. You get sort of tired of automated mannequins and the noise they make but I'd go again. And I really haven't told the half. There is a lot of ad vertising - there is ballyhoo - but it's fun. If you think social security helps when you retire, you're right. But it's also some thing you can depend on now. Whenever you need information, i? contact any social security office. As of January 1, a divorced woman no longer has to prove she gets sup port from her ex-husband to get monthly social secu rity payments based on his work record, according to social security officials here. "The support requirement is eliminated by the new social security law," a spokesman said. Previously, a divorced woman who met the other requirements for entitle ment had to prove her ex- husband was providing at least half of her support-- or that he was giving her substantial contributions under k written agreement or was under court order to do so. Some State laws make it difficult for a divorced woman to obtain support from her ex-husband, ac cording to the spokesman. "Many divorced women in financial need have been un able to get social security payments for that reason," he said. Monthly benefits based on ex-husbands' work records are payable to divorced wives, beginning at 62; to divorced widows, beginning at 60; and to divorced mothers at any age if they have dependent children of that marriage in their care. The ex-husbands must either be getting social security retirement or dis ability payments, or they must have died after work ing long enough under so cial security.
