Grandma Scz ••• There's a time, a comin' fer sure, when folks '11 have t' take a long hard look at this economy, tighten the belt an' learn t' git along wi' the essentials, seems t' this granny. From where I sit, a lookin' at the world, the ridiculousness o' the straits we're a findin' ourselves in, comes from extravagant livin', a gittin' accustomed t' havin' too much food, a bein' careless wi' material possessions, an' a lack o' regard fer th' things a dollar buys. Along wi' the dollar depreciation, th' lack o' respect fer it, 's grown t' the extent that what it can buy, which's very little, seems t' ha' lost its value. In days gone by, folks wuz taught t' be careful o' their shoes, an' clothes, an' the I Wdt enry C^Plat nJealer \ i Established 1875 3812 West Elm Street Phone 385-0170 McHenry, Illinois 60050 Published Every Wednesday & Friday at McHenry, Illinois Second Class Postage Paid at McHenry, Illinois By McHENRY PUBLISHING COMPANY Adele Froehlich Editor ^ Larry E. It 'ppears t' my mind that somewhere along the line, we've lost our true standards. Somehow it seems t' all tie in wi' the state o' affairs in the country. Th' psychology seems t' 've changed toward ever'- thin', e'en human life. There 'ppears t' be a carelessness in attitude toward self, an' con sequently, in most things, evident in so many folk these days. We see it in the kind o' work they turn out, lackin' a pride in the doin'. Wi'out instruction, younguns grow up lackin' th' depth 0' appreciation fer anythin', mostly. Parents shirk their duty, in a rearin' the young, when = they neglect that ingredient, necessary t' buildin' a regard fer ever'thin' pertOTttri't' life in this world. Lack 0' that regard brought us t' this point in th' state 0' our ecology. The attitude 0' enjoy now, an' pay later, seems t' be th' order o' the day. Some don't even seem concerned that there may come a day when they can't pay, an' they say, "So, what?". A correct attitude 0' responsibility don't grow in one, wi'out the teachin', seems t' me, an' th' world falls inter th' hand 0' posterity, brought up by parents, doin' a lot 0' complainin', but nothin' to correct th' faults. The state o' th' world c'n improve, only, by people who care. This ol' granny wonders if we'll si improvement, an' ever git away from th' inflated con dition, inter which>ve've fallen. Only the people c'n accomplish it.
