Match times are Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) For fans who might like to refresh their memory, we give you part of the story as follows: This week we join hundreds of happy and loyal basketball fans in the McHenry area in honoring the Warriors of McHenry High and the man who has so ably guided his boys to the championship of the North Suburban league, Coach Cliff Fulton. It was in the Woodstock gym last Friday night that a packed house watched the Fulton flashes turn in a dazzling performance to clinch the title in a conference loaded with strong teams. Courage has marked the success of the team in many a hard-fought, up hill battle along the trail. Some games were won in the final seconds, some in overtime and a few with the greatest of ease. They com­ bined to give McHenry fans many thrills and chills throughout the season. Modern day basketball decrees that only long and lanky players can win the bunting. The Warrior squad dispelled this belief in many games as they out-ran and out- shot the opposition. Every man could sink'em. And Coach Fulton showed great con­ fidence in his bench strength as he hustled specialists into games at opportune times. Maybe he needed defensive strength. Maybe the offense needed a shot in the arm. Maybe the spot was right for controlling the ball. Whatever the need, the strategy worked. Some boys were in the game only a couple of minutes, but were credited with saving the game. This victory story was planned for a week ago, but a pepped-up Zion-Benton team came to town and upset our team to snap the victory string games. The boys fought Warriors, but could sen up" as they had throughout the season. With no further worry about a victory string, the team travelled to Antioch for a non- conference game and put on one of their famous exhibitions of dazzling passing and shooting. Hebron came to McHenry for another non- conference game and saw the Warriors score an unbelievable total of 40 points in one quarter. The Warriors were back on the beam and ready to sew up the conference title. The biggest concern for the team's success came at the end of the first semester at MCHS when Don Bentz completed his eligibility. Don had played all the semesters allowed under the rules. Everybody knew that Don had been a tower of strength under the boards and had also contributed heavily to the scoring department. He was the big man on the team Leo Heimer dropped in for a short visit this week. He is creeping up on the "Old Timer" class in McHenry and it is a pleasure for us to have such a visit. Leo joins us in asking for 50-year items in the Plain- dealer. Anybody else? Well, what do you know! Mary Etten phoned. Of course, we covered a lot of ground. Brian Lund and Steve Koerber sparked a stfong defensive effort, and both boys dominated the boards. Terry Reilly again led the scoring as he collected 20 points. On Monday evening the freshmen complemented a stingy defense with a 47 percent shooting effort from the field to overwhelm Dundee. Terry Reilly collected 8 of his 19 pts in a torrid 3rd quarter which saw the Warriors outscore Dundee 14 to 2. The regulars gave way to the reserves after the 3rd quarter with the score 36 to 18. The freshmen travel to Libertyville Saturday morning and entertain Marengo Monday By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry high cagers fresh from wins over Barrington and Dundee take to the hardwood for another double header this weekend. On Friday night they host the dangerous Libertyville "Wildcats" and on Saturday they travel to Woodstock to play the Marian Central Hurricanes. Libertyville and McHenry are currently in a second place tie along with Zion Benton. Like all remaining conference games this is a must game for the Warriors. Libertyville lost to Zion last week, and barely beat last place Crystal Lake. This game will match up the only two father-sons com­ bination in the league. Bobby Leon , son of Coach Larry Leon is the Wildcat high scorer, on the other hand Roger Ludwig, son of Coach Ludwig, is the Warrior high scorer. The Warriors have the momentum. They have been playing great ball since the holidays. They beat Libertyville earlier in the season. It will be a tough game, but I am sure the Warriors will meet the challenge. Let's go Warriors and beat those "Cats". « On Saturday, McHenry and Marian will be meeting for the first time in a regular season game. The schedule calls for Marian returning here next year. Marian has been having its troubles, but in the past few morning at 10 in the West Campus gym. Last weekend they beat a good Marmion of Aurora team. The only times these two teams have met was at the Elgin regional several years ago. Who can ever forget that game. It went into 3 overtimes before Marian emerged the winner. It was probably the finest game ever played in the regional tournament. Both teams will go all out for victory. You can bet that the Marian gym on Saturday night will be filled to capacity. My suggestion is that you arrive early, if you want a seat.
