Deaths EVELYN M. SCHERECK Evelyn M. Schereck, nee Nelson, 60, of 2005 Hilltop drive, Spring Grove, died Feb. 7 at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan. She was born in Chicago July 6, 1912 and had been a summer and permanent resident for the past 45 years. The deceased was a member of the Lakes Region American Legion Post No. 703 auxiliary; Fox Lake Garden club; Fox Lake Women's club , and AARP of the Spring Grove area. Survivors include her husband, Charles; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Susan) Rout, Spring Grove; and a sister, Vivian Burgeson. Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 o'clock at the Hamsher funeral home, Fox Lake, with burial in Cole cemetery, Spring Grove. LEONARD SMITH A Spring Grove resident, Leonard Smith, 62, of 1008 Nippersink, died Feb. 8 at his home. He was born May 9,1910, in Donithan, Mo., and had resided in Spring Grove for the past 12 years. He was a carpenter by trade ano belonged to the Carpenters Local 250 in Lake Forest. Among his survivors are his wife. Opal, nee Cauble; one daughter, Mrs. Maxwell (Betty) Voyles, Hobart, Ind.; five sons, Jack, Spokane, Wash., James, Lake Villa, Billy, Waukegan, Terry, McHenry, Robert, Spring Grove; eighteen grand­ children; two great­ grandchildren; one brother, Curtis, Waukegan; two step brothers, Dan Allen of Missouri, Lewis Allen, Michigan, and one step-sister, Jenny Spencer, Oregon. Last rites were conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Hamsher funeral home, Fox Lake, with interment in Grant township cemetery, Ingleside. Distinguished Rank For Two Area Students Rosemarie Thelen of 313 W. Ringwood road and Steven Richard Spencer of Route 1, both of McHenry, were among the 3,312 students at Purdue university who achieved a distinquished student rank during the first semester. These students represented the top 17.24 percent of the 19,207 undergraduates on the West Lafayette campus. The list released by Registrar Nelson M. Parkhurst included 831 students with straight A records in their semester's work toward bachelor's or associate (two- year) degrees. This number represented slightly more than 4.32 percent of the un­ dergraduate student body. To qualify for distinquished rating, a student must have a grade index of at least 5.5 (B plus) out of a possible 6.0 (A) in at least 14 hours of academic credit hours and have no grade below C (4 points). Dick Vorhees On Academic Honor Roll The office of admissions and records at Elgin Community college has released the list of 331 students named for honors following the end of the first semester. Dick Voorhees of McHenry was among those on the academic honors list. The Dean's list, signifying a 3.5 - 4.00 grade point average, included 121 students. The Academic Honors list, signifying a 3.0 - 3.49 grade point average, included 210 students. Students named to either list must carry a minimum of 12 hours of college credit per semester. EDWARD J. NEUKIRCH Edward J. Neukirch, Sr., 915 S. Totem Trail, Oakhurst, died Feb. 8 in Gross Point Nursing home, Niles. Mr. Neukirch was 73 years old, born Aug. 2,1899 in Germany. A McHenry resident for the past 23 years, he was a retired punch press set-up man for Illinois Tool Works. Among his survivors are his wife, Tusnelda; three sons, Edward, Jr., Skokie, Gerhardt, Chicago and Ronald, Niles; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Christel) Tobsing and Mrs. Dominic (Hildegarde) Sarni, both of Chicago; fifteen grandchildren and one great- grand-daughter. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Barron Hall funeral home, 4332 Elston avenue, Chicago, with burial in Montrose cemetery. MRS. PAULINE BROSCHEp Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 5, for Mrs. Pauline Broscheid, 94 , 204 N. Mountain road,Wausau, Wis., at the Helke West Chapel, Wausau. The Rev. Michael J. Gebhart of Mont Clare Assembly of God church, Chicago, a son-in-law of the deceased, officiated. The mother of Mrs. Guy Disney of Whispering Oaks, McHenry, Pauline Dietrich Broscheid was born Jan. 14, 1879, in Germany. In 1903, in Germany, she was married to Ernst Broscheid who died April 1, 1918. She was active in the ministry for over 50 years. Survivors, besides Mrs. Disney, are a son, Benjamin of Chicago; two other daughters, Mrs. Clark Lonie, Merrill, Wis., and Mrs. Michael Gebhart, Chicago; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Interment was in Merrill Memorial cemetery, Merrill, Wis. MA Degree In Music Earned By R.E. Mikus Richard E. Mikus of 7811 W. Chestnut drive, Wonder Lake, was among the 650 graduates at DePaul university's mid-year convocation held Saturday, Feb. 4. Mikus received a Master of Arts degree from the School of Music. The Very Rev. John R. Cortelyou, C.M., DePaul president, conferred degrees on the graduates in ceremonies at the Medinah Temple. Rev. Paul C. Reinert, S.J., president of St. , Louis university, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and delivered the commencement address. Also receiving honory Doctor of Humane Letters degrees were Remick McDowell, chairman of the board of Peoples Gas company, and Attorney Nathan Schwartz: MOVIE INFLUENCE LONG CREEK, GA.-After seeing the motion picture "Deliverance" which was filmed on the Chattooga River, four young men at­ tempted to shoot th$ rapids as done in the movie.
