Mrs. Gordon Gabel, presided, and introduced distinguished guests: Mrs. Victor Lello, President pf the Department of Illinois; Mrs. Thomas Mc- Manus, past department president and department finance chairman; Mrs. Arthur Buller, llth district president; Mrs. Arlo Paul, llth district secretary; Clarence Ham­ mond, Senior vice-commander, American Legion, McHenry County council; Joe Lewis, Jr., vice-commander, McHenry County council and llth district sergeant-at-arms; Lou Rossber, commander of McHenry post American Legion; Mrs. Ray Smith, president of McHenry unit. Eleven units were represented and reported their activities and membership. Those with 100 percent, were Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Hebron, Huntley, Marengo, Union and Wonder Lake. Outstanding reports such as contributing to the chapel of the four chaplains; Depart­ ment Emergency fund; 7 point program; Elgin and Downey hospitals, blood donors; Christmas cards to veterans overseas and survey on the Treasury Bond drive. The county has purchased a flag for the county courthouse. A new flag has beer) purchased through donations by the units, which was displayed for the first time at this meeting and will be at all district functions. The county chair­ man, Mrs. Frank Brockrogge, reminded the units to send clippings to her promptly for compiling the County President Press book. The Department convention will be at the Pick Congress hotel, Chicago, July 19. She reminded the members to send their paid up membership in order to be 100 percent by convention time. The district president and district vice-president were dressed in colorful Italian costumes, the district's country represented this year. The council adjourned with the prayer for peace and retiring of the colors. Wonder Lake will be host to the next county meeting Friday evening, March 2. ON HONOR ROLL The Academy of Basic Studies, Inc., Milwaukee avenue, DesPlaines, reported that Nora Fallon of McHenry, had been named to the honor roll for the third six-week grading priod which ended Jan. 26. Nora is in the first grade at the academy. Being placed on the honor roll is a valued recognition since it requires that the upper grade student earn five A's in eight major subjects to qualify. Primary grades must earn a minimum of four A's. YMCA Chess Club Growing The adult chess club was launched by the YMCA Jan. 17 and is alive and well. Present membership is up to sixteen with a weekly growth rate of four new members. At the weekly meetings, some players are involved in formal competition arranged by a YMCA volunteer, while others are simply playing sociable chess.
