X The Bible Speaks PAGE 8-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1973 The Special Hole Of The Father--- How To Avoid Father-Son Conflict Are there many fathers in a hostile relationship with their maturing sons? Unfortunately, yes. Father-son conflict is a common American tragedy. It would be well if all fathers understood why - and how to avoid it. A first step is to recognize and accept the fact, that some degree of rebellion against parental authority is natural and instinctive -- even necessary - in youth. If you as a father are going to stand on your dignity and resent any rough speech or demand for more rights as a personal affront, you are bound to have conflicts with your children. Irritability may characterize all your relationships. The sensible father takes his maturing son's assertiveness in stride, overlooks a lot of it as har mless, and tactfully argues him out of its excesses. Similarly, when we find ourselves surrounded by clouds of doubt, we need to direct our lives into a higher level where we may free ourselves of weaknesses and seek the will of God. How can we attain these heights? Through the Church! It offers continu ous opportunities for new growth, new life, new understanding. We need not wait for a more convenient time. We can enter into the life of the Church NOW. Copyright 1973 Keister Advertising Service, Inc.,jStrasburg, Va. St John the Baptist Catholic Church Johnsburg Rev. The difficult period of adolescence passes, and they are still friends. The informed father disarms hostility by sincere demon stration of love and interest. He is a sometime pal. He makes and does things with his son; he talks with him on a basis of equality and courtesy - all this without losing his force as the authoritative head of the family. Modify your voice. Listen as much as you speak. Don't feel that as a parent you have the right to interrupt. Pay real attention. Don't read a newspaper and carry on a conversation at the same time. Share experiences on a basis of equality; games, church attendance, home repairs. Be home for meals whenever possible. Make mealtime gay and pleasant. Never review faults and errors at mealtime. In other words, build up your boys pride and security by showing affection and faith. Believe in him as a son and he'll believe in you as a father. Establishing Rapport With Your Children It is important that you establish rapport with your children as soon as possible. Procrastination, like good intentions, will get you nowhere. You don't establish an intimate relationship overnight. If you're not a day- to-day father, with the lines of communication between you and your children always pleasantly open, you can't suddenly start talking to them about highly personal things. Strangers don't so easily become intimates. As Father you belong in the life of your children from nursery^ days on, and not as Mother's helper. You have an individual role to play, the role of authority. You must be your family's mentor and guide; your children must receive from you a clear, unquestioned understanding of right and wrong. In a friendly way, you must make your children un derstand that there are limits to what they may or may not do. At the same time, you must make them feel that you like to be with them, to laugh, and joke and play and work with them. You are far ahead as a father if your children find you easy to talk to. You are also far ahead as a father, if, without being prissy, or self-righteous, you set your children a day-after- day standard of decent human behavior - friendly, honest, and generous to all with whom you have dealings. Virgje L. Chappell, Pastoi First Baptist Church, McHenry SPIRITUAL GIFTS - There is a great deal of talk today concerning spiritual gifts. Many persons are seeking special charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are particular endowments bestowed upon in dividuals by God Himself. The individual may have tendcmcies or potentialities in certain areas but the actual gift is believed to come from God through the unique work of His Holy Spirit. One of these special gifts is known as the Koinonia of the Holy Spirit. It is found in the benediction of II Corinthians 13:14, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion (Koinonia) of the Holy Ghost be with you all. Amen." The word is used in many other places in the Greek New Testament and is translated by various English words. There is no English word which is fully adequate to translate the meaning of the Greek concept of Koinonia. Some usual translations are communion, fellowship, sharing and participation. To participate in the Koinonia one must be in union with God the Father through the saving work of Jesus Christ. "That which we Tiaveseen and heard (of Jesus Christ) declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship (Koinonia) with us: and truly our fellowship (Koinonia) is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ" (I John 1:3). The Apostle John says that the Koinonia is both horizontal and vertical. Before one experiences Koinonia with others bp must have experienced that Koinonia with God. Dr. Frank Stagg describes Koinonia as the common life (of Christians) which has its source in God. Koinonia of the Spirit is more than accord. It is not a congenial fellowship of "buddies." A society may be made up of strangers. A community is made up of persons related through a common life. A Koinonia is more than a society or community. It is a fellowship of persons created by the Holy Spirit in Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul states that there is no fellowship (Koinonia) between righteousness and unrighteousness. (II Corinthians 6:14). Continuing through the sixth chapter of II Corinthians, we find the Koinonia brings about a separateness and a purity in the individual lives of believers. Koinonia also demands unity within the community. When a church is threatened with a rupture of fellowship, there is an evidence of lack of the Spiritual Koinonia there (Philippians 2:1, 2). There is an acceptance of one's Christian brothers wheri the Koinonia is present, regardless of social or other differences. (Philemon 6 and 14). Koinonia is an essential element to the Christian brotherhood. It is actually no more than the evidence of God's love in action in the lives of His followers as they interact with one another in brotherly love.
