Helping PAWS by Carol Wilyat The following information was taken from "McCall's Complete Family Guide to puppy and Dog Care" by Ar thur Trayford, D.V.M.: WEANING "The age at which puppies are normally rejected by their mothers varies from four to six weeks. Since it is now believed that puppies tend to be psychologically healthier if they remain with their mothers for a period of two months, some females (or those in which the maternal instinct is uncommonly strong) will carry on for that length of time, but they are a minority. "Actually, the weaning process should begin when puppies are three and a half to four weeks of age, at which time they can be given sup plementary feedings, such as small quantities of Pablum and thinned evaporated milk, broth, strained baby foods, or, if the owner is disposed to take the trouble, scraped raw beef. The supplementary feedings should be given twice daily while the puppies are on a full time nursing schedule, three times a day when they are nursing twice a day, and four to five times daily, depending on the size and appetite of the individual puppy, when, at approximately six weeks of age, they are nursing no longer. "During the weaning process, the puppies should be kept away from the mother in the intervals between nursing, and once they are completely weaned they should be removed from the mother entirely, so that her milk supply, which is stimulated by suction, will gradually dry up of its own accord. The flow of milk can also be lessened by reducing the food intake to the normal one meal a day. Rub bing the nipples and the area around them with warm camphorated oil is another means of hastening the drying up of the milk. "When you begin to feed young puppies that have been accustomed to the nipple from a dish, you can help those that need help in making the transition by dipping your finger in their food and letting them lick it off. Once they become accustomed to licking instead of sucking they easily take the next step, that of lapping their foegd from a plate or a bowl."
