PAGE 14-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1973 What's Best For Your Child - And You (Series 1) SELF RELIANCE Self-reliance is the grand old American ideal, the principle upon which our country built its greatness. But are we raising self-reliant children today? College graduates want safe jobs in large coporations, with regular pay increases and a good pension plan. Workers are satisfied to accept feather- bedding as a union prerogative. Youngsters sacrifice romance for the security of going steady. Too many American parents say: "I want my children to have an easier time than I did. I worked hard, but I hope my children won't have to. That's one of the reasons I worked so hard." This is an egotistic attitude. of very doubtful benefit to your children. Here are three ways to help you give your child a feeling of self-reliance: Let him feel loved for him self, not for his good behavior. He then feelsvstrong and tries to cooperate. Love him and set him a good example, and he will develop a conscience, his true moral strength in time of trial. Never do for your child anything he can do for himself. Your child's strength and self- confidence are in exact proportion to the difficulties he himself has overcome. Every time you help a child do what he might have done for himself -- when you feed him, or dress him, or set his mechanical toys in action, or do his homework for him -- you rob him of his strength and self-reliance. Never interfere with what a child is doing, as long as it is neither dangerous nor im moral. A child must create and build on his own dreams. This gives him power, the feeling that he can rely on his own thoughts and efforts. The wise parent provides food, shelter, affection, play space, and constructive toys; he also encourages com panionship with other children. In the give-and-take of friend ships freely formed, in building and making things, in physical sports and games, the child is continually testing and developing his abilities-in other words, he is developing self- reliance. Self-reliant children are less likely to become delinquent. They have the strength to meet their obligations and so more readily do their duty in the world. They feel self-confident and so do not need to become belligerent. Self-reliance cannot be taught as a lesson. Your child will behave according to the influences around him. At (For And About Teenagers ) HE STIU VVAJ\1T£P TO GO OUT WlTW ME", &ot r ft.ew IT. asked another one of my girl friends to go with him and I'm out in the cold. What should I do? THIS WEEK'S LETTER: I have a problem that I hope you can solve. In October and Novem- home, parents can provide children with the good in fluence of religion, literature, art, and music, as well as with the personal example of their own constructive and co operative behavior. The interchange of affection between parents, their loving words to each other, their gaiety and high spirits fill children with faith that it's a good world we live in. A happy home is the most significant of the good influences that form a child's life. ber of 1971 I used to go out with this certain boy I really liked. During that school year we didn't see each other often because we had different schedules. But sud denly I told him it was quits. I just got tired of him. This sum mer he asked to go back with him and I told him I wouldn't mind going back with him. Then, when school started, my best girlfriend started hanging around his locker and messing around with him. I didn't have the courage to tell her to leave him alone because I didn't care to have a conflict about him. Everytime I saw her with him, I would go in the oppo site direction. He told me it was nothing serious and that he still wanted to go with me but I blew it and he got mad at me for some unknown reason. Now he has SWEAT SHIRTS ft- API£6,ENft> \̂ MM ABVJ rioME EC.
