I PAGE 4-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1973 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 25, 1948) In the early days steamboats carried passengers from Pistakee and other lakes to McHenry, where railroad connections were made, but now fast moving motor boats dart in and out along the Fox river also bringing travellers to this city. Among the first to settle at the Bay was John Pitzen, who settled on the west shores of Pistakee and built a log cabin for his home. This land has remained in the family up to the present time. Indians viewed the white man's ap proach from Bald Knob, the highest point in the region, which is surrounded on three sides by water, extends to a height of more than forty feet. From the top of Bald Knob signal fires burned, bearing messages for the red men. Then to the north of McHenry on Fox river in the lake region is Johnsburg, named for the leader of that early band whose given name was John, they called it Johnsburg. The letter contained a personal note and a talk on "Children Of School Age", which Mrs. Pearson will read at the next meeting of the Ringwood community club. Mrs. Anna Howard and Mrs. Emily Lawson were hostesses of the American Legion auxiliary meeting. Following the meeting a quilting party was held. A very pretty quilt in the Legion colors of blue and yellow is being made. "In the Fountain of Youth" is the name of the one act play to be given by members of the Eastern Star at their hall March 31. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 25, 1948) Friends were shocked to learn of the sudden death on Monday evening, March 22, of Roy H. Cromwell at his home on Main street in West McHenry. Mr. Cromwell suffered a fatal heart attack while sleeping in his apartment in the Freund building. Two excellent parking lots are provided in this city, one in the center of town and the other in West McHenry. Friends of Alfred Tonyan will be happy to learn that he has purchased the trucking business of Pat Douglas. Mr. Tonyan will carry on in much the same way as Mr. Douglas, specializing in livestock hauling and farm trucking. Only veterans in schools, colleges and universities pursuing full time courses of education will be entitled to i n c r e a s e s u b s i s t e n c e allowances under a law signed Feb. 12 by President Truman, Harry J. Pilarski, itinerant contact representative of the Veterans administration, said in a recent interview. The new payments will be at the mon thly rate of $75 for a veteran without dependents, $105 for a veteran with one dependent, and $120 for a veteran with more than one dependent. Joseph Jackson left last Friday for Meridian, Miss., where he will play ball with the Meridian baseball club next season. Seventy-two per cent of Illinois farms now have telephone service, Mr. G.L. Wilburn said as compared with forty-two per cent for all U.S. farms. These are the highest percentages in history for both Illinois and the nation. Hardesty of Rt. 2, Wood stock. Rev. Bruce Brenneman officiated at the double ring ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. A1 Horn, Jr and daughter of Wonder Lake recently returned from a cruise to Nassau with the ship docking in the tropical island after an overnight trip from Miami. Among the sixteen Western Illinois university seniors who will be graduating in June and have accepted positions beginning Sept. 1 is Jean March of Route 9, McHenry, who will be employed by District 15, Rolling Meadows, Palatine, as a librarian. A blue and white shower was held at the home of Mrs. Richard Loser in Edgebrook Heights this past week honoring Mrs. Thomas (Judy) McMahon of Elizabethtown, Ky.
