An electric oven runs only a part of each hour it is used. The rest of the time it coasts on stored heat because it is insulated on all six sides. Due to this stored heat, cooking in the oven can be more economical than cooking on top of the range. To take advantage of this insulation, you can cook a whole dinner--turkey and trimmings, vegetables and pie--in the oven at once. You then use a fraction of the energy it takes to cook each separately. If you have three dishes to be cooked at slightly variant temperatures (say 325, 350, and 375 degrees), pick the mean temperature (350°) to cook all three. Remove each one as it's done. Of course, to keep your oven's insulation operating efficiently, avoid opening the door as much as possible. Oven cooking is only one area where we have information that can help you conserve energy. Having a Director of Civil Defense means, in the case of damage from a tornado, the residents of the village will be eligible for Federal funds. If you think that a tornado can be a disaster you are right. How do you find out about an im pending storm with damaging winds? You listen. A warning that a tornado is approaching this particular area is given by the McHenry fire siren. It is a steady blast for three to five minutes. We have no siren at McCullom Lake but a warning from McHenry can be heard. When you hear that particular blast take cover. Best place is in your basement or a neigh bor's basement. If no basement, then under heavy furniture in the center of the room. Have a battery powered radio handy to follow the progress of the storm. Leave a window in the house open to avoid the creation of a vacuum which could shatter from in ternal presssure. In the event that a tornado has struck and caused damage in the area the Civil Defense people will be on the job with city officials to help. Remember not to touch loose or dangling wires. The live power lines may become entangled with metal fences telephone or other wires. And be watchful for fires at all times. In most cases a tornado travels from a westerly direction, usually from the southwest. Most tornados occur between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. But tornados have occurred at all hours. Never ignore a tornado warning, take cover. VILLAGE BOARD The village board of trustees meets on the second and fourth esday of every month, at 8 .m. in the beach-house.
