It may be like reading yester day's newspaper, but some may like it for their scrap- books: First round play in the 27th Annual C.O.F. State Basketball Tournament took place Sunday in the new Johnsburg Junior High School Gymnasium. Large crowds, coming from as far as the Mississippi River, cheered for their favorite teams. A full day of basketball found 12 teams getting by first round contests. Enjoy The Soft Life from i iRruner DIVISION OF ALOON The popular C.O.F. Tourney was returned to the Johnsburg- McHenry Area this year, after being held in Chicago the past 5 years. Local teams have always been well represented with this year being no ex ception. St. John's (Johnsburg) and St. Mary's (McHenry), co- hosts of the tournament, had 14 entries in the 33 team event. Nine of these teams advanced into semi-final round play to be held this Sunday. The local courts are represented by at least one team in each of the five age divisions, with two or' three teams in three divisions. First round games began in the Junior Division at 11:00 a.m. with St. Gregory's (Chicago) defeating a stubborn St. John's (No. 2) 6th grade team, 20-16. St. Mary's (No. 1) followed with an easy victory over St. Gregory (No. 2) 14-4. In the 8th Grade Junior Division, Rapid City (Moline) rallied after being down at half time by 13 points to upset the highly regarded St. John's Sonics. A tough second half full court press turned what seemd to be an inevitable defeat into a standing crowd victory. This big win allows the Rapid City team to advance to the semi final round game against top ranked St. Gregory. Hampshire defeated a strong St. Mary's (No. 2 ) 36-25 to meet St. Mary's (No. 1) this Sunday. In the Ranger Division (15 years and under) Silvis (No. 1) (Moline) showed that it may be the team to beat in this division with a 28-15 victory over St. Gregorys (No. 3) team. St. Gregorys (No. 2) team defeated the Silvis (No. 2) team in the closing seconds of their game 28-24. Let Octoberfest take care of itself. We took care of the corn beef and cabbage~an Irish man's dream. All we need now is for Stan Jozwiak to come along with his special day. Junior High Women Faculty Beats 8th Grade Girl Cagers Bedecked in green, we headed for the office--smiling at everybody we met. They smiled back, probably amused at our green. Early birds put down a carpet of green crepe paper that led right to our desk. Friends dropped in to say Top-O-The-Mornin' and enjoy a little drop-coffee. "Earl's. Girls" presented a special cup with a recipe for Irish coffee. We like the cup. Now for the recipe. Winkel brought some made in Ireland brew a few days before. Some of our^ German relatives thought it was great. A gift designed and made by Joe O'Etten is a beauty that we will keep a long time. Never knew big Joe was so artistic. Another Spring Grove boy, Arnold Rauen, came in and joined Fred Meyer in remin ding us that Monday would be St. Joseph's Day. No Irishmen are they. Brenda gave us a new case for our Plaindealer copy, schedules, notes and what not. Pretty good one, too. She forgot to remove the price tag. Or did she?
