Did you know? .... a quote from "Cat and Kitten Care". "A female cat is called a queen. The word "tabby" does not mean a female cat as many people think; it correctly refers to the striped or whorled marking often seen on short- hair domestics and on long- hairs, too. Male cats are called toms. A place where cats are bred, raised or boarded is known as a cattery. "A female kitten can be capable of conceiving as young as six months of age. She may come in season two or more times a year. Symptoms are excessive mewing or "calling" rolling on the floor and rubbing. You may also find an unusually large number of male callers sitting on your doorstep. If you own an unspayed female cat, you will want to keep her closely confined during these periods unless you are willing and able to assume the responsibility for taking care of and finding good homes for her kittens." "The first feature is an op tional one," explains tax specialist Sanford Kahn. "It enables you to designate $1 of your taxes for the political party of your choice - $1 that you would be paying anyway." Teh second feature is a tax benefit designed to help the smaller political contributor. "If you didn't give anything to the candidate or party of your choice in 1972," says Kahn, "it's too late now to claim this tax advantage. But those who did contribute ought to be aware of the opportunity to save on their income tax payments." Referring to the first feature, the $1 gift to a political party, Kahn emphasized that this is not an additional tax. "The government just t§kes it from the money you're already paying in taxes." These con tributions will be used in the 1976 presidential campaign. "It amounts to donating a dollar to your political party without it really costing you a the Bull Valley area at *815-459- 5577. You must attach a separate form - 4875 - to your 1040 or 1040A. "Some people may object to letting the government know which party they favor, but the Internal Revenue Service in sists it's taking precautions to keep the information out of the hands of politicians. When the tax returns are opened, the 4875 will be separated from the income tax forms so the auditors won't get a look at them." Adds Kahn: "Also, you can designate the $1 to go to a non partisan general account if you don't care to specify a political party. And, of course, you don't have to attach the 4875 form at all if you don't want to." The second political in novation confronting taxpayers this year "was intended to encourage more grass-roots participation in our election system," §ays Kahn. Under a law in effect only since last year, the political contributor may choose either a tax deduction or a tax credit. "A tax deduction is subtracted from your total gross taxable income," Kahn explains,, "thereby lowering the amount on which you pay taxes. A tax credit is subtracted directly from what you owe in taxes." The tax credit permitted is one-half of the contribution, up to $12.50 for an individual or $25 SHADE TREES ^ for a COOL SUMMER ^jlowerwocJ grows and guarantees them! • FREE DELIVERY* $ Varieties Available: • GREEN ASH* • LOCUST* * NORWAY MAPLES < •SUGAR MAPLES • SYCAMORE • • LINDEN • . . . a n d m a n y m o r e ! PaulA.Schwegel&Co for a married couple filing jointly. Which is preferable, the tax deduction or the tax credit? Replies Kahn: "If the con tributor takes the standard deduction on the 1040 or uses the new short form - then he has no choice. He'll have to take the tax credit. To be in cluded as a deduction, the political gift would have to be itemized as with all other deductions." Whether the credit or deduction will result in a greater saving for the taxpayer who does itemize hinges on his tax bracket, according to Kahn. "The political contributor would realize the greatest benefit from the tax deduction provision ~ instead of the tax credit - when he's in a bracket that's taxed at more than 25 per cent. That bracket begins with a taxable income of $10,000 a year for individuals and $16,000 a year for married couples filing jointly." When the taxpayer at this income level hasn't made the maximum contribution per mitted - if the individual has given less than $50 or if a married couple has given less than $100 - then the problem of selecting a deduction or a credit "becomes a bit com plicated," Kahn admits. "You should figure what it would cost you both ways and then go for the greater saving. A com puterized tax service does this automatically." PAGE 9-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1973 ii s lndWlu«»» This column of questions and answers on federal tax matters is provided by the local office of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and is published as a public service to taxpayers. The column answers questions most frequently asked by taxpayers. Q) I saw a story in the paper giving the average de ductions taken by U.S. tax payers last year. If I keep my deductions below these figures, will it keep me from being audited? A) No. IRS computers screen all individual returns for error, not just tho3e with higher than average deduction figures. Sophisticated mathe matical formulas are Used to rank returns by error poten tial and those having the high est probability of error are selected for audit. If a deduction on your re turn is questioned, you must b6 able to substantiate the item. Q) When should I report in- However, Kahn suggests that, "as a general rule, the higher the rate of taxation the better it would be to take the tax deduction." terest earned on my Series E Savings Bonds? A) You should report inter est when the bonds are cashed or report the annual increase each year. For more information, see IRS Publication 576, "Tax In formation on United States Savings Bonds." It's available free by writing your Internal Revenue district office. Q) I earned over $25,000 last year. Can I still use the short Form 1040A? A) Yes. You can earn any amount and still use the short Form 1040A. However, all your income must come from wages, salaries, tips and not more than $200 in interest and $200 in dividends. In addition, you may not itemize deduc tions on the short form. If you did not receive Form 1040A in the mail and want to use it, a copy may be obtained at any Internal Revenue office, most banks and post offices, or you may use the order blank in the Form 1040 package to ob tain a copy. Q) My husband and 1 file a joint return. He wants to des ignate a dollar of oar tax for one political party, while I want my dollar to go to another party. Can we do this? A) Yes. If you are filing a joint return, you may desig nate $2 of your tax toward the Presidential Election Cam paign Fund. Thus, each of you may designate $1 of your tax to go to a different party or to a non-partisan general account for all eligible candidates. <3 MOW AR_E AM AMERICAN NEW PRODUCTS PlKST ANNOUNCES DEVELOPEP ?
