STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Lake County Rifles Make Early Plans For Next Season Football Games The 1973 football season will start July 21 in this area when the Manitowoc Chiefs meet the Lake County Rifles at 7:30 p.m. in Carmel field, Mundelein. This opening exhibition game matches two of the most powerful teams in the Central States Football league. The Rifles last season won the southern division of the league while the Manitowoc squad was in contention up to the very end of the season for the northern division crown. Season tickets for the Rifles are on sale at the team office, 117 East Cook street. The Central States Football league is considered to be one of the top minor leagues in the United States. The football played by the Rifles is of unusual interest because the fans are close to the field and easily can watch the action unfold. Attendance last year set a record as many football fans and families discovered the Rifles for the first time and came out to the games, including people who said they came when they were unable to get the tickets they wanted for the major league football team in this area. Lake County's first league home game will be Aug. 4, when the Rifles meet the Delavan Red Devils and the last home game will be on Sept. 22, against the Rockford Rams. The last game of the season will be played against Racine Oct. 6, with the championship game two weeks later. All home games will be played in Carmel Field on high way 176 in Mundelein. The field is located just west of the high way 176 exit for the Illinois Tollway and istpnly a 35 to 40 minute drive from downtown Chicago. The games will start at 7:30 p.m. this season instead of the traditional 8 p.m. The main reason for the earlier start is that many fans said they would bring their children to the Saturday night games if play started earlier. 1973 SCHEDULE EXHIBITION SEASON July 21, Manitowoc Chiefs, Home.
