Much Blindness Is Preventable, Society Says Three Americans go blind every hour, according to the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. This situation is even more ap palling since in fully half of these cases the blindness could have been prevented. Adding to the tragedy is the fact that in Illinois, nearly 400,000 dollars of tax money is spent each month on blind assistance alone. There are a number of preventive measures, ac cording to the society, the second oldest voluntary health agency in the state, but one of the most effective deterrents is the basic eye examination. All adults, the society advises, should have an eye examination at least once every two years.
