The civil defense director is Marie Sladeck. The civil defense organization in the village of McCullom Lake consists of all the elected of ficials, the chief of police, an appointed director and a temporary assistant. The. organization should include more people, more on this later. Having a director insures the village of federal assistance in the event of a disaster, I'm sure all you readers understand the importance of the civil defense organization. All warnings of impending disaster come thru the local police and the office of civil defense. We hope there will be enough volunteers available to help in case of emergency. Please if you are called upon to volunteer your services, remember there are no dues to pay, no meetings to attend after the first briefing, just a willingness to help when needed. The election is over and George Luto emerged as the winner, for the office of president of the village. The voting turnout was good, one of the best in years. To have a better understanding between the village board and residents, attend the board meetings, this is what it will take and nothing else. The meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, at 8 p.m. in the beach-house. "We worked closely with the Treasurer's Banking division to eliminate this problem and a new process was developed in the Comptroller's office by our personnel to allow the Treasurer to clearly pinpoint the second endorser. UKM*- y efts Ask L i toul CCS This column of questions and answers on federal tax matters is provided by the local office of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and is published as a public service to taxpayers. The column answers questions most frequently asked by taxpayers. Q. I filed my return just before the April 16th deadline. When can I expect my refund? A. If there are no mistakes on your return that might delay processing, it normally takes about six weeks after a return is filed. It might take a little longer to get your refund, how ever, due to the large volume of returns filed in April. Q. Through my own fault, I wrecked my car. I don't have insurance to cover the damage. Can I deduct this loss on my 1973 return? A. Yes. If you itemize your de ductions, damage to your car caused by an auto accident is deductible as a casualty loss whether or not it resulted from the faulty driving of either driver, as long as it was not caused by your willful negli gence. Remember, a personal cas ualty loss may be deducted only to the extent it exceeds $100. For more details, see IRS Publication 547, "Tax In formation on Disasters, Cas ualty Losses and Thefts." It's available free by writing your Internal Revenue district office. Q. I just found out that I could have deducted the actual sales tax on the new car I purchased last year, in addition to the amount shown in the sales tax tables of my 1040 instructions. Can I still claim this deduc tion? A. Yes. Just file a Form 1040X which is designed to amend a previously filed return. On this form, you simply recompute the portion that has changed from your original return and send it, along with any neces- sary information, to the ad dress shown in your 1040X in structions. Your amended re turn must be filed within three years from the date your orig inal return was filed (a return filed early is considered to have been filed on the due date), or within two years from the time the tax was paid, whichever is later. Forms 1040X are available at any IRS office. Q. I dropped some old clothes off at my church. Can I deduct the value of these clothes as a charitable contribution? A. Yes. If you itemize your de ductions, used clothing is de ductible as a charitable con tribution to the extent of its fair market value at the time of the gift. Remember, you can also de duct your cost of transporting the clothes to the church. interest was lost during the backlog period," Lindberg said, "because the state could not collect money it was en titled to, then invest it ap propriately." The backlog will be-like best, eliminated by mid-May, the Comptroller said. Federal Reserve bank personnel in Chicago have approved methods used to solve t h e s e c o n d - e n d o r s e r readability problem. Most of the state checks involved cleared through the Federal Reserve System. Lindberg said he is in v e s t i g a t i n g m i c r o f i l m techniques to prevent any future backlog on state collection of forged check money. Origin of the backlog was microfilm record equipment put into use eighteen months ago that did not yield a photographic reproduction sufficiently clear to identify the second endorser on a check, Lindberg said. | -reme de , [ Manthe i irr»sw* 1 Mohawk or Mr. Boston Connoisseur\ "FRUIT BRANDIES or CORDIALS 98 Fifth AMERICAN 5 STAR BRANDY V2 Gal.
