Stewart W. McMillan, Jr. (Pub. April 27 May 4 -11,1973) NIPC Sets Up Offices As "Listening Posts" Three additional branch offices as outlets for local governmental assistance were approved last week by the Northeaster!} Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC). In ad dition to an office in Lake county and an immediately pending opening in DuPage, the Commission hopes to establish other outlets in rapidly developing areas. The offices are intended as "listening posts" to determine needs of communities dealing with problems of urbanization. In this way, NIPC can provide immediate and timely assistance by drawing on its resources of planning experts. NIPC has identified these other urbanizing locales which might benefit from a direct tap on technical services: nor- thewestern Cook and southeastern McHenry counties in the area of Barrington, Crystal Lake and Arlington Heights; the "new towns" area of southern Kane, southern DuPage and northern )Vill counties from Aurora, Naperville and Bolingbrook to Joliet; and the southern Cook and northeastern Will counties area of Homewood, Harvey, Park Forest and Park Forest South. Acting at a quarterly meeting, commissioners ap proved the area desks as part of a total $2.6 million budget package. Budgeted at $100,000, the branch offices are the single largest budget item increase over 1973's $1.8 million document. NIPC Executive Director Matthew L. Rockwell said the location of new area offices will depend on the in terest expressed by local communities and the offer of office space. Commissioners last year had approved the concept of desks in each of the/Six counties in northeastern Illinois. An office was subsequently established McHENRY PUBLIC LIBRARY • HI ¥ m ' LIBRARY BACKERS-Bill Bolger, president of the McHenry Library board, accepts check in the amount of $310 from members of the McHenry Woman's club. Rockwell sMd the concept of county desks 'has been very successful but in some counties the urban problems are not as critical as elsewhere. "We need the added em phasis on assisting growing communities," Rockwell said. "We will continue to open area desks as population grows and our local assistance program will build.". 350 Gourmet Books Sold As Benefit Service About 350 gourmet books were sold during the past month by the parents association of Countryside Center for the Handicapped. Proceeds from the books, which feature special services at sixteen excellent restaurants, are given to Countryside for expansion of the center's services to han dicapped individuals. Additional books are still available for interested persons in the area. The majority of the restaurants, which range from family type to haute cuisine, offer two dinners for the price of one; others offer free after- dinner drinks and carry-out buckets of chicken. The restaurants are located mainly in the northwest suburban area, but some are in the northern suburbs and others, including a Greek restaurant, are in Chicago. Countryside, located south of Lake Zurich, serves han dicapped indivduals in parts of Cook, Lake, McHenry and Kane counties. Children 3 years of age and older attend a day school, and adults learn work skills in a rehabilitation workshop.
