Seems obvious t' this ol' lady, that men wi' idees o' betterin' things fer th' people, through renovatin' departments o' government, meet up wi' strong opposition an' snide tactics on th' part o' officials who see some danger t' th' political gravy they've enjoyed fer so long. Makes a body wonder if there's jist no hope o' a cleanin' up th' mess we're a flounderin' in. One o' these days, th' people '11 wake up t' th' fact that they ain't enjoyin' jobs wi' paychecks reachin' up'ards o' $50,000 a year, an' access t' fortunes t' put away fer old- age. It all comes out o' th' pockets o' people who ne'er did know real luxuries, an' many need t' scrimp an' save t' pay th' high taxes, an' pad th' pockets o' those who know how t' git it. A sittin' here, rockin' an' thinkin', it comes t' mind, I wonder if someone took th' trouble t'figger out how much money'd be saved if we'd git down t' brass tacks an' alot conservative amounts fer certain offices, accordin' t' their importance, takin' inter consideration necessary in comes needed fer average families t' git along on, in comparative comfort. I'm a thinkin' that we'd soon find out who our politicians are that really care about th' office they serve, an' those who're In political office fer th' material gain. When a person, a workin' fer some company, is convicted o', some misdemeanor against that company, he loses his pay, his job, an' his reputation, t' th' extent that he don't git good references from that employer, an' finds it purty hard t' find another job. Th' idee o' officials a drawin' their pay, after a bein' sentenced t' jail, an' fined a goodly sum, 's an eye-opener t' what's a goin' on, I'd think. If that's th' case, th' people'd pay th' large fine, by pay in' th' person their high salary. Seems t' my way o' a lookin' at it, all th' salaries, from th' lowliest one on th' political scoreboard, 're far too high, an' it's up t' th' people if we want t' rob ourselves in order t' pay 'em. Makes this ol' granny git her dander up, t' think about it, an' th' whole thing's grown up about us wi' out us a noticin', much, it's been so gradual. What we need's a good house- cleanin', 'ppears t' me.
