K PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY. MAY 9, 1973 EARL WALSH • Just home from the McHenry i Area Chamber of Commerce ; Trade Fair. They put it on real ; good. I In ' talking with Frank { Colomer, we decided that { McHenry has everything. • Business places have many fine \ items. ' If you want to buy something, ! try McHenryfirst. The Chuck Hollenbachs had a "Nostalgia" booth that took our fancy. Horse collars -- sure we harnessed horses. Old gas pump - sure we pumped one of those in the twenties. 'Twas fun remembering. Glad to see Virgil Pollock up and at 'em after serious in juries. It takes the old spirit. Watched the White Sox and Wilbur Wood demolish the Yankee Empire this afternoon. (Were you watching, Fred Meyer?) The Sox showed the Yankees hitting, pitching and fielding all through the series like they never saw before. Riding through the coun tryside we decided there is enough extra land in roadway right of way property to raise enough to feed a small nation. Looking through old records at the City of McHenry booth at the Trade Fair we saw an item of expenditure back in 1899 - John Walsh, police service for the month $40. That was our father. Said it was a good thing they didn't have any withholding in those days or there wouldn't have been anything left for bread and butter. Our "Brenda" made a believer out of us so we were there again for the McHenry Choral Club spring program. And it was good! So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Golfers Down Grant McHenry high school golfers defeated Grant on Friday by a score of 170 to 215. Ed Thomas Jiad a 39 and Roger Wanta a 42 'for the Warriors. The sophs also won 190 to 214. We doubt if any community for miles around can stir up the exceptional talent that McHenry can boast. And, where would you find a director as dedicated and talented as Our Brenda? ' • ~~""L Take your pick. There were some great numbers. But, ;ame intermission and an announcement "Here's Otto" and the crowd went wild. Otto Pyritz again showed he is the People's Choice as he entertained with music and song. Like 01' Man River, Otto just keeps rollin' along. Jim Curran sent us a clipping from the Chicago Trib in which one Steve Peterson of Crystal Lake reported a poll taken at their Junior High. Out of 4,967 votes, the Cubs were favored by a 2,073 count. The Sox had 861. Ho-ho! Now, hear this. The Cardinals had 661 votes and the Pirates 388. That has to be a National League settlement down south of us. Jim's note: Dear Earl, Do you suppose Bacon has something to do with this? You see why I spend a lot of time in Crystal Lake. Jim Curran The reference is to Harold "Zeke" Bacon who grew up in McHenry in the glory days of the Cubs, Any of you young folks ever hear of "Gabby" Hartnett, Guy Bush, Pat Malone, Charlie Grimm? That will give you an idea of how ancient Jim and "Zeke" are. We should get them up to date. Come to think of it, we thought Jim was a Sox fan. (He seems like a man of good judgment). His 2 run triple provided the winning blow. He struck out 8 and walked only 3 for the win. Friday the locals were defeated by Elgin Larkin 7 to 3. Mike Winters was the losing pitcher. On Saturday the sophomores suffered a double loss to Barrington. In the opening game Barrington won 6 to 4, getting just 2 hits, neither out of the infield. Three errors in the sixth proved the Warrior downfall as Dave Wickencamp took the loss. In the 2nd game Barrington won 11 too as they pounded out 11 hits to only 1 for the sophs. Terry Gough and Pat Stanek did the hurling for McHenry. Marty Zeller had 3 hits for the day. Frosh Baseball Last Tuesday Ron Hom- pelmann pitched a 1 hit 3 to 0 victory over Crystal Lake. The young freshman issued 3 walks and struck out 7. On Saturday the frosh suf fered a double loss to Barrington 9 to 8 and 12 to 2. In the opening game the locals led 8 to 3 going into the bottom of the 7th when the roof caved in on them. A couple of hits and 2 errors plus a walk enabled Barrington to rally for the win. In the 2nd game it was all Barrington as they won easily 12 to 2. The Frosh "B" squad split with Barrington losing the opener 6 to 3 and winning the nightcap 4 to 2. By Dick Rabbitt The Barrington Broncos brought the whitewash brush to McHenry last Saturday and defeated the Warriors 8 to 0 and 4 to 0. In the opening game the Broncs jumped on Tim Tonyan for 5 runs in the first inning as the first 5 batters all hit safely. They added 2 more in the 2nd inning and coasted to the win. In the 2nd game Barrington scored one in the first and added 1 in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 4 to 0 win. Steve Stanek was the losing pitcher. Lack of hitting was the Warrior downfall, as they had only 6 hits in both games. Last Tuesday the Warriors committed 8 errors and lost to Crystal Lake in 8 innings 5 to 4. Tom Knaack was the loser in this game. Bob Dobbertin had a homer for the Warriors. On Friday in a free swinging game the locals lost to Elgin Larkin by a score of 18 to 8. The Warriors managed 12 hits, including 3 triples by Bob Habich. D.C.--One suspects, after only a bit of play, that baseball's 1973 Major League winners could include a number of 1972 winners. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati in the East and West look as strong as they were thought to be, Chicago and San Francisco might change the script, but last year's winners remain the favorites in the National divisions. So far, the Giants in the West have been the impres sive surprise. In the American League East, Detroit's good pitch ing (though Mickey Lolich was not in early form) may keep the Tigers on top. Bos ton has had pitching prob lems. New York has been up and down. Baltimore, of course, could change the 1972 story, and looks strong. In the west, the White Sox didn't get off to that expect ed fast start, but Kansas City and Minnesota look better. Oakland is off slow ly but still the favorite. One wonders if perhaps the Roy als have a real chance at it. Kansas City has both pitching and hitting; like Houston in the National West, they could pull an up set. Parsley grew up in Crystal Lake and played football at the high school there as did Franz. The only returning coach from last year's Rifles team is Ken Kratz who will handle the defense which last year was considered to be the best in the league. ^iiimimiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiriinniiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHib | K0ENEMANN j Country Made Sausages, I Hams and Bacon iGERMftN IMPORTS ftND CHEESES | A Full line Of I Delicatessen I 815-385-6260 frosh Thinclads Defeat Crystal Lake 88 to 38 The -McHenry high school freshmen track squad jour neyed to Crystal Lake last Friday and came home with an 88 to 38 win.
