PAGE 8-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MAY 25, 1973 Witnesses Hold 2-Day Convention "God's way of rule is based on love. Human rulership often emphasizes doing what is best for yourself, moved by greed." So stated Ruben Cobos, Jr., district representative of the Watchtower Bible and Tract society, as he gave the keynote address of a two-day ministerial convention at tended by Jehovah's Witnesses in this area. Cobos continued, "Truly upholding divine rulership now means responding to God's love, gladly putting his will ahead of our own comfort; it involves demonstrating love for our fellowman, exerting ourselves to help them to gain salvation." The 1,602 in attendance in cluding many of the general public, were stirred by the seriousness bf the issue discussed by Cobos who con cluded by stating, "It is im perative that we now recognize this divine rulership, decide for it and direct our lives in accord with God's divine rulership," Mr. Glenn Erickson, presiding minister of the local „ Woodstock congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, ex plained that the theme of this Bible talk, one of several presented, was "Decide Now for Divine Rulership." Ex plaining whv Jehovah's Wit nesses continue calling on their neighbors from house-to-house, Erickson said, "If we deeply believe God's rulership is best for everyone, we will want everyone to hear about it and will exert ourselves so that they can. For this reason Jehovah's Witnesses are active in 209 countries of the world." tfive .̂ Ifend C8 SERVICES flic Secffet * When someone shares a secret, it's on its way to becoming no secret at all. And yet it doesn't cease to be a secret until you have shared it. When Jesus preached in the wilderness, hun dreds came miles to hear Him. They wanted to share His secret ... the secret of God . . . the secret of Man and God. So right there in the wilderness, it was on its way to becoming no secret at all. Except that, even today, not everyone has shared it. Academically every intelligent person knows what Christianity is all about. But each Sunday all over this world someone is finding in church a new strength, a new purpose, a new faith. For the heart of Christ's message brings a human soul into harmony with a mighty and loving God . . . whose power gives our lives direction . . . whose concern gives our lives meaning. The secret that was is still a secret, until YOU share it too. HELPING PAWS By Linda Keyfauver Helping Paws office is open Monday through Friday, 10-12 and 1-3; call 815-459-2641 to report lost and found animals and also to adopt an animal. Kittens, after weaning, require three meals a day until fully grown. Then two meals are usually enough. The best food for a cat is ground beef steak. Cats are also fond of chopped liver, heart and kid ney. They should not be fed only one kind of meat. Most cats tike milk and fruit juices, such as apple, tomato and orange juice. Fresh water should always be kept in a handy place for them. Cats also like butter, eggs and cottage cheese. Most cats like fish, but almost all canned fish is too oily for the taste of any cat. When feeding a cat canned sardines or salmon, first pour boiling water over the fish. Always remove the hard, sharp bones from fresh fish. Chicken bones also are dangerous, they splinter, and many cats have choked to death on them. A cat can eat almost everything the family does and thrive on it. Common cats like breakfast food (especially if it has a little milk), and asparagus and other vegetables, either cooked or raw. The house cat will eat many queer foods. If these are examined, they will, in most cases, be found to contain some element needed for the well- being of the cat's^ body. Cats • like foods rich in Vitamin A, the so-called "eye vitamin". The digestive tract of the cat, having no appendix, adjusts itself to many artificial foods, even nuts and crackers, with no ill effects. A cat can live for six days without food. A well-fed cat and not a starving cat catches more mice. Food should not be left standing in the cat's dish. It may gather germs and make the cat sick. Catnip is a cat's delight. Sprinkle a small handful of it on the floor for the older cats to roll in, and give the kittens a catnip mouse to play with. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry SAVED: GRACE AND FAITH Following a series on baptism it seems appropriate to conclude with one lesson on how salvation is attained. The Bible refers to "salvation" or "Being saved" as that experience which brings a person into a right relationship to God. The scriptures all em phasize that man-has become separated in fellowship from God. "All we like sheep have gone astray" (Isaiah 53:6). "Everyone of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no not one" (Psalm 53:3). "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us" (I John 1:8). The Bible teaches the universality of sin in mankind. Sin is not just breaking the laws or rules of some ecclesiastical body but of breaking fellowship with a divine and holy God. We each one find ourselves in ttiis separated state. a But a beautiful Biblical triith is that God continues to love mankind though he has been disobedient to Him. "God so loved the world that he gave..." was Jesus' kind expression (John 3:16). "God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved (John 3:17). God's love is always expressed in goodness and kindness. "Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights..." (James 1:17). Often people think they must be prac ticing, dedicated Christians to receive any attention from God. This is absolutely not the case! God's love and attention is upon every man."...he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:45). This divine attention which produces concrete blessings is called "Grace". The scripture passage which shows the ultimate in grace is "...for by grace are ye saved" (Ephesians 2:8) and "God commendeth (shows) his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). There is no clearer expression of unmerited favor toward human beings than that expressed by God in his provision for us. Since man is a free agent before God, he must personally respond to God's grace. God's grace is available for all but of no consequence to the individual without personal response. This truth is pointed out in full in Ephesians 2:8, "For by grace (God's favor) are ye saved through faith (man's response)". So we see that God alone provides for man's salvation but man must respond to God in total belief. My only response to God is simply, "I believe." "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and it is not by anything that you have done, it is the gift of God. It is not the result of what anyone can do, so that no one can boast of it" (Ephesians 2:8-9 Williams). Obviously baptism, church membership, taking communion, etc. are all acts or works which we can perform. Ephesians 2:8-9 removes all these from the list of requirements for salvation. There is nothing we can "do" to be saved. It has all been done in Jesus Christ. Our only part is to believe! (Acts 16:31). Lease Virgin Acreage To Conservation Unit The site of McHenry county's annual Daffodil Walk will soon be available to the public for the study of conservation and environmental education. The McHenry County Conservation district has leased the property for one year, beginning June 1, from Alice O. Joslyn of Woodstock. District trustees signed the lease at their regular meeting May 17. The fifty acres of native vegetation, bounded by Mason Hill road and Valley Hill road in the Bull Valley area, has been treasured by local con servationists for its ancient black oaks, its forest flower specimens, and its selected daffodil plantings. Its springs and lakes are a major water source for the surrounding area. Private use by Mr. and Mrs. David Joslyn and their family as a nature preserve has kept the acreage in an almost virgin condition. Previous to this time the only public access has been limited to the annual Daffodil Walk. Terms of the lease provide the Conservation district with an option to acquire the property at a future time. As lessor, the district will im mediately assume respon sibility for the property and open it to limited public use. During the lease period the district will pay pro-rated taxes and assume liability for the users of the property, as well as SENIOR CITIZEN MONTHLY INCOME PURCHASE A S500000 53A % 3 YEAR CERTIFICATE AND RECEIVE A MONTHLY CHECK CERTIFICATE MONTHLY CHECK $5,000.00 $23.96 10,000.00 47.92 15,000.00 71.88 20,000.00 95.83 25,000.00 119.79 30,000.00 143.75 THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OK MCHENRY 3814 WFiT ELM MCHENRY. Groups or individuals may use the property for con servation or nature study, but no unsupervised recreational activities are permitted. This includes picnicking, camp outs, fires or burning. Animals and vehicles are prohibited. 2. The preserve will be maintained by the district as a limited access site and entry to it can be gained by contacting the district office at 142 Washington street, Woodstock, or by calling the office. 3. The fragile condition of the nature preserve requires regular patrolling and supervision which will be performed by McHenry County Conservation District em ployees, including supervision while the property is being visited. The traditional Daffodil Walk will be continued and the district will assist in scheduling similar activities for any person or group. Though small in size, the Joslyn property is rich in beauty and natural history. The family decision to place it in the care of the McHenry County Conservation district is an enrichment for the whole county. The wind on Ireland's coastal areas often rolls up the sod like a rug.
