The game needs to be re viewed from the publicity and fan-interest standpoints. It's not that there's any thing wrong with this won derful game of skill. But from the promotional and fan-interest view, 1t could be made more attractive. It could be speeded up if pitch ers were barred from wasting time. More innovations, like the American League's des ignated hitter, should be tried. I n t e r e s t i n g l y , i t ' s t h e players themselves who con tribute to the souring of fans.,. Working people, who make up the bulk of baseball's fol lowing, are turned off when they read and hear pflayers are striking or threatening to strike to get more and more--when they are already better off than the vast ma jority of Americans. Better Than Drugs! President Nixon has called narcotics and drug abuse the Nation's No. 1 social problem. He has urged every American to help in the fight, an endeavor in which we all can join.. Organizations and groups in perhaps unparalleled numbers and kinds are enlisting. Com munity programs are springing up in every part of the country. What more can we do. as indi viduals or as a community? SPORTS WORKER One important thing lies in a new and almost unexplored direction. When a drug abuser or addict is. asked. "How could ' someone convince you to stop?", the answer, whether voiced pre cisely this way or not, is usu ally, -"Show me something bet ter than drugs!" This is not a foolish question, but a rational, even a desperate, seeking for help. Yet we have not done enough to find out what other choices might be available or offered. Thus, a unique effort has been launched to encourage communities to devise innovative programs and activities that will provide drug- less "turn-ons" and fulfill some of the needs that drive people-- young and old and middle-aged --to drugs. Called, "Alternative Pur suits", the program is a col laborative one of the Nation's communities, involving the in terchange of ideas and infor mation on how people in all parts of the U.S. are going about providing alternatives to drug abuse. The kinds of programs and how they will be achieved is for community teams to work out. The ultimate aim is to focus the ideas and work of interested people all over the country on finding and using alternative pursuits, resources, and activi ties that will give the addict or abuser new hope, new zest, and new ways to satisfying living. HEW's National Institute of Mental Health is aiding the pro gram and helping to furnish clearinghouses for the inter change of informaiton for and among communities.
